Help with braid please

Getting some new line today. Got some questions on braid. I here that the Powerpro line is really good. Does it really matter? Also when I put it on I read that you can just leave a very small layer of mono line on the end and tie the braid to that. Is this the best way? Fishin for reds and flounder. Was gonna go with the 10lb test. Too much?

Power Pro is good, and it’s not too expensive.

Yes. Leave some mono on as backing to keep the braid from slipping and knotting up.

10 lb will work unless you fish in the grass a lot. If you have to horse them out, it might break. I use 10 on my lighter action rods and 20 or 25 lb on heavier action rods.

I prefer Spiderwire EZ-Braid but started with PowerPro. They are both good line.
15-20lb for inshore (reds, flounder, etc.)
Back your spool with mono. I use 15lb mono. It helps prevent the braid from slipping on the spool.
Use enough mono backing to ensure that 110-125yds of braid fill the remaining spool.

Ensure the mono backing is spooled tightly
Ensure Braid is spooled very tight.
Take a papertowel, fold it in 4, put the line in the middle and folder the papertowel over the line.
Fold the papertowel again to make a “tube” with the line running through it.
(Right Hand) Starting with your pinky, bend the papertowel back and forth between each finger ///Hold the rod behind the first eye.
The tighter you squeeze your fingers the tighter the line will be on the spool.
The tighter the initial spool, the less problems you will have with the line sinking into it’s self.

Sweet thanks for the help. Gonna go with 15 i think. Dont have the biggest rod/reel. Had prob a 30" red break this morning. Almost threw my pole in the water i was so pissed. Ill get him tomorrow

Go get 'em!

Good luck!

I’d get 15lb FINS windtamer. It never wind knots, has great strength and holds knots really well.

I use 10lb green power pro. I don’t like PP slick. Just use the regular variety

Don’t make My mistake and use a mono knot ,Optiker helped me out on this one go with Palomar.

Wicked fishing

I agree optiker. the slick is junk! What ever you do, do not buy pp super slick.

Power Pro 15#. Its on all my rigs and I rarely ever break off a fish in the grass or on docks. The powerpro slick is prone to wind knots, I dont see many with the original power pro and almost all i do is throw artificials (mainly light finesse baits that easily cause wind knots on other lines).

Best advise I can give you… Whatever braid you choose to go with learn how to tie a double uni knot since you will be wanting to tie a flurocarbon or mono head on the end of your braid for many fishing applications.

This may help

I prefer a swivel tied with uni knot, Cant go wrong with powerpro and uni knot, its recommended on the box. then a few feet of leader either mono or floro depending on where I am fishing.

Great stuff guys. I wanted to put on 15lb power pro, but they were out of pretty much every brand of braid in 10-15lb. I got 20lb power pro. Yes, CaptDan I used the double uni. Really cool knot to learn if you don’t know how. Was able to get out for about an hour and a half. Cant say enough about the braid. Cast was way smoother, much more sensitive, and the strength is ridiculous. I did get a little knot up at one point, but it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary.

The Albright knot works well for that connection as well.
