Help with Folly Fishing

A buddy is coming down to Folly Beach next month and we want to head out for some fishing. I would love to catch some bonnet heads or something bigger inshore or nearshore. Any help would be appreciated on the best place to fish for sharks or whatever else might be close to the beach.

come to folly pier, catch a tarpon.

Around the lighthouse or the stono inlet are great places for sharks. The stono inlet has pretty extensive sandbars and holes and troughs, full of bheads and other toothy critters!

Do you have a boat?

I agree with Yakman, set up your rods with the faithful Carolina rig, put on some cut mullet (either cast net for em or you can buy them frozen from Crosby’s) and fish the inlet. Plenty of sharks cruising that area.

Capt. Dons in West Ashley has fresh Mullet.

How many Tarpon have been caught there this year?

seen 2 swimming around bait.1 hit bait and spit it out.1 hook up,jump out the water 4 to 5 times.lost it.this is what I’ seen.so none.

So Stono inlet is the best chance I have of catching a fish. Yes, I do have a Carolina Skiff 198 DLV so we plan to fish wherever the fish are. I have not fished for tarpon before. not sure I would want to waste a day off learning for now. Fresh mullet seems to have been my best bait for Sharks, live is preferred but if you cant catch em then have some fresh as backup.

No if you want sharks fish beside folly at the inlet of folly and the ocean that’s where all the shark hunters fish we caught a 9ft hammerhead there

Breach inlet (IOP) has plenty of bonnetheads. Cut mullet or quartered up fresh blue crabs on the bottom. Carolina rig is easiest rig to use. You have a good chance of catching redfish there too with the same baits.

If you take the boat to stono inlet, be careful. That area can be very tricky at times.

  1. Beside Folly, does that mean ocean side or off the beach?
  2. inlet near folly off beach
  3. inlet near follow inshore
  4. stono main channel

which has the best chance of sharks? would love to catch a larger hammer head but honestly like the taste of bonnet head. So probably would like to do both.

hopefully this file uploads…I don’t mind showing where i have had some luck!! We have been using cut mullet and frozen head on shrimp. With bottom fishing comes them (**() RAYS!! Had to cut the line several times when the swallowed the hook. Set-up was your basic Carolina rig.

Hope this helps!

Genehunter, I’m no expert in the area nor do I have any top secrete spots. I can tell you a spot where I have had sucsess with all types of fish, and it’s a spot out in the open where I have seen other people fishing also. Anchor your boat at the point where the Stone & Kiawah River meet and through out a couple of Carolina Rigs. There is a shell bank on the left side where I have caught Reds, trout, flounder, and sharks. Good luck.

thanks for the tips guys, I see a pattern with the bonnet heads like in Edisto, any good branch off a main river will have bonnet heads but have never fished Folly. figured I would ask. My buddy is coming down from St Louis and is a really good friend. I wanted to turn him on to some shark fishing since they are a lot of fun to catch. I would love to get one or two bonnet heads and spend the rest of the day trying for something bigger like a hammer head.
