help with gillnets

Does anybody have any info on what size gillnet i would need for spots and whiting.Thinking of trying this out any info would be great thanks.

Best spot for gillnetting would be over by the DNR building along the Ashley river. Goodluck!!

I remember many years ago heading up a creek at 5am and finding a net blocking the entire creek.
We pilled it up took all of the fish out and took the net home.I gave it to my BIL who at the time worked for the State. He went out in the state boat and found two guys going up and down the creek looking for the net. They saw him and hauled ass.LOL

Stonoman

Well if they can’t comply with all the laws they should be turned in

I used to love them on Edisto beach. Had many a good night back when I didn’t mind wading in cold water. That was 30 years ago. Had a couple of nets buggered up by a big passing shark or two.

I was either imagining them bigger or we were using less than a 3" mesh cause I would say a lot of whiting on our coast would not get caught on that.

Seines & Gill Nets (Anchor, Set, Stake & Drift Nets)

Gill nets no longer than 100 feet with a 3-inch minimum stretched mesh size may be used only in unrestricted areas of the Atlantic Ocean. Gill nets no longer than 100 yards with 3-inch minimum stretched mesh size may be used only in special designated inshore areas.
Gill nets must be marked with one end buoy that is international orange in color with the name and address of the owner. Operator must be within 500 feet of the net, be within hailing distance and have visual contact with the net at all times when deployed.
Nets may not be set more than halfway across any waterway at any time.

No feathers ruffled here Wufford, I was just voicing my opinion, and there is never anything wrong wiht asking a question and if you are going to use one asking so if you do one you use it properly is appreciated…

Fred67, I stand corrected… I should have said you won’t find a “lot” of love for them on here… too many people use them improperly and the doesn’t sit well with a lot of people…

Nothing under 3" is legal…

Nikon, so you know I am 100% against miles of commercial gill net left to drift. We only used a single 30 yard net off the beach. Set up at dusk. Had a nice fire, couple of adult beverages, metal milk crate to put over the fire, a frying pan , fresh fish(hopefully) and hush puppies. Always had a pack of hot dogs just incase.

that sounds like a good night to me thats more like what i was thinking of a small net just for something for my kids and i to do but we will defintly take something to eat just in case lol.

I saw a guy in the water up to his neck in the Stono last week, he was seine netting next to the Limehouse Bridge. Water temp was 66, that was some uncomfortable bait catching.

Fred, we used to set em on Edisto too. I’ve been wanting to get 1 or 2 and set them during the mullet run, love them fresh mullet smoked or fried. Wufford, let me know if you find someone that has them, we used to get ours from nylon net company in Tenn. We’ll get together and have a fish fry at the shop. “Jesus saved souls with the truth and caught fish with a gill net”.

You can’t catch fish on a dry line

i will let u know as soon as i find someone that has them we will get together and catch some biguns drink a few and enjoy the fresh fish afterwards hopefully lol great to know im not the only one that wants to do it talk at u soon lol
