Recently got a 1992 yamaha 55Hp. This motor has only been ran 3 or 4 times in the last 20 years. Its been covered the entire time with a boat cover. What suggestions do yall have on a path forward to get this motor running. Haven’t done anything yet, trying to get a starting point. Thanks
I am not in no way, shape, or form a mechanic, but I would suggest starting with cleaning the carb(s), new spark plugs, and changing the oil in the lower unit. Any more than that, someone who knows more than me will have to chime in.
If you need someone who can take stuff apart, scatter parts all over the garage, lose the last (and most important) bolt, or break things that are unrepairable, then I’m your guy.

Might want to change out the water pump, impeller may be dry rotted.
Unless you know differently, you also have to assume that it has had ethanol gas in it. All rubber associated with the fuel delivery system is probably shot even if it had a fuel stabilizer added. If it is oil injected, the oil lines are probably dry rotted. I learned this lesson the hard way. Mix your fuel and oil before starting.

start with a compression test and spark check
no need to work a motor that has bad compression…
remove spark plugs and spray pb blaster or your favorite penetrating oil into cylinders
let sit 5-10 minutes
trim motor up.
pour transmission fluid into cylinders, and slowly turn flywheel by hand.
after spining by hand several rotations, hit starter and spin motor over, while spraying lube into the carbs.
then do a compression test.
if compression is over 90psi on all cylinders, then you can move to spark and fuel.
This past week I pulled my fathers dinghy motor out of the garage to get it going again. It is a 5hp Mercury 2 stroke. It had not been ran in 3 years. I started by just slowly pulling the starter cord just to make sure the piston was free. I changed the spark plug and drained and replaced the foot oil. It only has an internal gas tank (1/3 gallon). I drained out the old and filled the tank back up with fresh gas/oil and added small dose of stabil fuel treatment.
It took a good number of pulls on the cord but the motor fired up and ran great. I closey monitored the pee stream and all looked well as far as the water flow goes.
For me that would be the biggest concern. The condition of your water pump impeller. It would probably be best just to change that before you proceed to the starting phase. I hope you have good luck with it. Let us know how it works out.

Thx yall for the advice. Going to start this project in about a week. Will keep yall posted. Have a good weekend
Thx for all who shared advice. I was lucky. This boat was outside covered with heavy black plastic and a tarp. Had not been moved in 19.5 years much less motor started. First thing I did was check to see if I could turn flywheel, it turned. Placed battery in boat and tilt/trim work. Placed fresh gas in gas tanks, replaced spark plugs, cleaned out filter bowl under motor cover. After a few attempts of starting motor it fired. A few more it was running with a skip every and now and then.
I let it run then shut it off. I put sea foam in gas tank, sprayed in cylinders, and into gas line going to carbs. Fired it back off and let it run. Took it to river and ran it to see how it would perform under load. Everything seems fine. Water pump stream was good. Brought it back home replace oil in foot. When I got back home and lowered the motor down, I noticed some gas running down motor. Did’nt see any obvious leakage, any ideas? All lines seemed to be in good shape. I moved them around to check for cracked and splits and there was none. Thx
Are there any voltage checks I should make or anything else I should be aware of. Thx
After 19 years, the water pump impeller is surely shot. I would replace that before running it again. The rubber gets hard, brittle and takes a set conforming to the housing. It won’t last long, even though it’s working now.

Ok I will do that. Is that water pump replaced thru impeller or does foot have to be removed?
…foot removed.

Be more specific - where, on lower unit, carbs, head? pure gas? or possibly unburnt 2 stroke oil?
It ain’t no mystery…this beer’s history!
When I tilted the motor down gas/oil mixture ran from the motor down the entire foot. The motor uses pre-mix gas oil. I know its coming from motor area but dont see anything obvious. Not sure where to look since I dont see anything obvious. Thought that since it sat for such a long periiod of time that it might be a carb
Make sure the drain screws on the carbs are all tight maybe.![]()
