Help

Hey guys…thinking of getting my first yak. Do most of you fish out of the open/sit on top yak versus the closed/sit in style?
Any recommendations for length? I am 6’2 about 200#…thinking about a 14’

You’ll get a lot of opinions here. Most will tell you to go see Dolphin D:smiley:

I fish from a 14’ Sit In that I built over 10 years ago. It’s fairly wide, stable and flat bottoemd. I’m 6’1 and 195. If I had it to do over I’d build something closer to 16’ for better hull speed and longer glide.

If you use a Sit in then make sure it has watertight floatation compartments or float bags.

Beautiful kayak TB !

Very pretty TB, I love the lines. How much does that weigh?

Eat mor trout.

It weighs about 45 pounds. I haven’t weighed it since i modified the deck a couple of weeks ago and added the rod holders, fishfinder battery etc.
I know it’s under 50 though

The pictures don’t do it justice y’all…

STFulton… I would suggest a SOT ( sit on top) kayak. Just about every manufacturer now has an angler edition made for fishing. I started out with a pelican 116 and it is a great boat, (I call it my fisher price beginner yak ) but I have since upgraded to a Tarpon 160… I would go with a tarpon 140 (14 ft)or if you liek to fly fish the WS Ride 135 ( VERY nice boat) to start out with or if ya have the cash I have a buddy that fishes a Native ultimate 14.5 that he raves about and is my dream boat. I just found a REALLY good deal on the tarpon . I am really liking my 160… very fast and smooth and very stable, not that I am planning on standing in it like a ride… like Too busy said go see Dolphin D at Time out in Mt P and he will hook ya up. He is the most knowlegdeable dude I know about yaks and hes a pretty darn good fishin partner too!

HAY I have a pelican 116 and i love it even if its made by fisherprice:smiley: its been verry good to me and i fish the rivers . I dont see spending more than 450 on a name. there not any better .Its just plastic:smiley:

Stillfishn don;t get me wrong I still have my pelican and I do love it dearly, “I started out with a pelican 116 and it is a great boat” My daughters have inherited it now and they are stoked to be able to go with me now… of course I only paid about $200 for mine new and the tarpon was only $400 fully rigged… I have made a bunch of trips in it, a couple trips to the ville but a lot of fishing on the cooper wiht it and it has been a great ride to learn on… but as much as I love it once I got in my Tarpon… hokey smokes bullwinkle… like night and day  My dad-in-law has a caiman boat with a trolling motor and while he had it cranked up as high as he could get it on a fresh battery I was still keeping ahead of him and I was barely paddling… normally I would have him literally doing donuts around me…

It’s not the prettiest boat I ever builtbut I had a purpose for this one from concept through construction…a lightweight, comfortable, unsinkable fishing platform

This is the prettiest
