So I’ve gone out on the Cooper three times now, today being the most recent, and I’ve had no luck! Any suggestions? I’m not looking to start a charter company or anything…I just want to go out and catch a few fish! I’ve fished both bridges, Castle Pickney and a few of the smaller creeks. Using mainly shrimp.
Thanks for all the help! I mainly blame the rougher weather!
fishing the bottom? under cork? what tides…you should be catching something…fish around drum island or over by dNR…or further up the ashley…we’ve been catching some along the marsh and creeks there …take a few minnows with you…and dont give up!
My buddy was fishing mullet, same luck…at least yesterday anyway. I am thinking maybe the weather wasn’t helping. I’ll try scootin up the Wando and hitting up more of the little creeks. I was fishing one on the bottom and one rod on a bobber, with about 3 feet of line under the bobber. Is it better to be out when the tide is coming in or going out?

I usually fish with 2 feet under the bobber. (Meaning that I am fishing in about 2.5 feet of water.) You might be fishing a little too deep. But, one rod on the bottom (carolina rig) and one on a bobber is the best 'hunting' technique. Just fish moving water. Fish don't (usually) bite on a dead tide.
You need to think like a fish. Redfish and trout are bullies. They set up in a comfortable resting place where they can ambush food that wanders too close.

There you go. Forget the bridges unless you want to swith to oysters and fiddlers for sheepshead, black drum, and little black fish. Target the banks and creeks in the Wando (Cooper is good, too, but the Wando is chock full of fish).

So I’ve been cruising up the Wando that last few trips, and three trips in a row I’ve caught fish. Nothing amazing, but fish are fish. I took my little girls out today and they were tearing up the pin fish and having a blast! I caught a little 10" trout, and my daughter snagged a puffer fish. Still trying to figure out how to get the Red’s…I think my Bayliner Trophy is holding me back haha, I’m having a hard time getting in close, the current and wind drag me around a lot, I think I’m just going to start running it bow first into the mud so I can get close to the banks. I haven’t gone much past the 526 Bridge yet though, so there is still hope.
Thanks for all the advice! I think I’m gonna sneak out one day this week by myself and try some more spots!
Nice work D.M. You’re on the right track. As you’ve probably guessed by now, it takes time on the water. Write down what you did on every trip, even when you were skunked. Keep track of tides, wind, water temp, skies so you can repeat it when it worked and not make the same mistake when it didn’t. T.B. is so right. Reds and Trout are lazy bullies! They do not like to have to do a lot of swimming in current to eat. They will hang out and wait for the bait to come to them. You have the right idea with creeks. Also make some runs at low tide and make note of shell mounds. I will tell you that nothing beats a big Red or Trout slamming your topwater bait. Ya gotta get up kinda early for that action though. Good hunting!
Maybe try the icw, behind sullivans or iop, fishing docks and deep holes may be a little more accessable for your style of boat. The icw generally has a higher population of fish also, better quality and variety. The closer you can get to under the dock with a mudminna or shrimp the greater chance you have at getting into a school of reds or trout. This time of the year is the best for structure.
Told ya the Wando was gonna get ya some fish… Stop back by and we’ll point ya towards some better deeper water spots</font id=“red”>“Paddle faster boys… I hear banjo music!”

So we went out all day today, spent the morning on the Wando, hit the Jetty’s in the afternoon…shoulda hit the Jetty’s this morning, since the wind and waves really kicked up this afternoon! Still haven’t found the Red’s yet, but we didn’t make it to far, did catch a few bluefish though, right there at Juba Island. I think next weekend I’m going to wander back to the Summerville Angler and get some more advice and a copy of that map Thanks again!
