running my 1984 johnson 2 stroke 70 hp 3 cyl on the river this morning and it quits peeing. After bumping it in and out of gear a few times it starts trickling out of the pee hose. Maybe 15% of what is normally is. Limp home trailer it to seels. Buy and install the new impeller set AND low and behold nothing changes. Any ideas guys?
Is water coming out of the exhaust?
Intake plugged with mud or grass?

Did you shove the hose up the water tube when the lower was off? That would tell you there is no clog in the system if water came out good. You can also flush out the t-stat. Make sure the pee tube does not have a blockage also.

Had the same thing happen to me on the Congaree. Turns out I had sucked up some sand or small rock fragments and clog the pee hole. Piece of wire solved that…

had one go up 14" and build in the metal nipple on block. I’ll see if I can get a picture of one of the wasps, tiny black ones. Crazy. Left a motor a stand for a couple of weeks had to tap out just about every exposed bolt hole.
Replaced thermostats and nothing. Did what CHRis said and couldn’t get air through it until I took it off and dug the dauber nest out.
Ever since then I always rub a dab of grease from the steering cable or tilt pivot bar and whip it up the pee hole upon every return trip.
keep a pack of pipe cleaners on board , they work great to temporary
plug small ports and p holes , been doing it for loooong time.

60 lb or greater leader works great, string trimmer line works well also
thanks for all the ideas fellas. havent hit the pee hole with any attempts to clean yet but will do so tomorrow!! air and solvents and pipe cleaner!
wish i had tested water flow with the foot off but that ships sailed. guess i could drop again if need be.
Worse concern is hit the Tstat housing with some creeping oil and tried it a hour later. first bolt immediately snapped and the others didnt feel right. looks like this is gonna be a bad one
oh and water is pouring out of the prop hub area and seems to be spraying out of exhaust. what little is coming out of pee hole gets scalding hot after ten minutes or so
I think you just have a plugged pee line. Hate it when that happens, but it happens. Better the motor than me [:0]
It’s an easy fix though. I usually stick a small strip of electrical tape over the hole when I remember. When I don’t, I keep a calibrated piece of coat hanger wire in the boat tool box to clean it out with. It’s a couple of times of year occurrence at least. Doesn’t take those little buggers long to made a mud plug. They get in my extension cords, air lines, propane lines and any little open hole anywhere that I don’t cover.

I CONCUR ON THAT ASSESSMENT. sounds real painful. will be donating one of my wire hangers to the cause here in a few minutes
If the little bit of water that is coming out of the pee hole is ‘scalding hot,’ then your motor is not cooling. This is not just a clogged pee hole. Something else/additional is wrong.
If the pee hole is clogged and nothing else is wrong, then the motor will cool and the water flowing from it should be a little cooler than the motor itself.
I’m no expert and hate to suggest bad news, but, I think you’re going to have to go deeper.

If the water that’s suppose to come out of the pee hole cant get out, it will be hot as like sitting in a hot water heater which is what its doing. Feel the water coming out the exhaust, and see if it as hot. I would take the cowl off trace the tube from the pee hole back to the block, unhook it, and clean from there out, if that seems to help might have to do it a couple of times. A piece of small wire leader works good for this.
Weedeeater line works well too!

ok so there was some debris in the plasic elbow where the pipe goes into the head. got that cleared out and it definitely peed better. but now it still wants to over heat. Think i might have blown the head? what would the tale tell signs of that be?
Compression. Check that first. May be time to take it to a shop. Well worth the diagnostic charge.
