so i had a very good christmas and got a nice new lever gun in .357 its been good for target shooting, but of course i fully intend to take it hunting. i have no worries about using it for deer, but has anyone used .357 against hogs with any success? of course placement is key with any caliber and im well aware of how thick the shield is on a mature boar, but will the .357 punch through it enough or should i stick to deer, smaller hogs, and head shots at close range only for bigger pigs?
I do nothing but head shots anymore after one toted of .3006 that knocked it off its feet. Trailed it 50 yards into the swamp but I wasn’t going into the water. They are tough animals.
whacked a 60 pounder at 10 yards with a .50 cal muzzleloader (300 grain hollow point) double lung and 7 broken ribs…STILL made it 75 yards! also had a 150-175 run about 30 yards after being pounded with a 30-06 at 150 yards. head shot with 30-06 almost straight down from the stand on the other hand…DRT. still curious to hear if anyone has tried .357 and how that performs, especially either the leverevolution or buffalo bore rounds.
Killed a couple with a Marlin 1894C ( 357 Mag ) with shots to the head or neck. Never tried to take a Boar big enough to have a shield, by hitting them in the chest with it though.
I’ve killed LOT’s of feral hogs with everything from a 22 mag to a 300 win mag . I have used a 357 mag revolver with much success at close range. I only head shoot hogs. Never had to trail one. My reasoning is that if I miss its OK if i wound its OK. after all its a feral hog. If you work the wind , you can get very close. They don’t see as well as a deer.
I killed a 5 or 6 with my 44mag lever gun. We set up ground blind near a wallow and have taken a couple at 50yds. My brother even killed one with his .357 Blackhawk from that ground blind. Most were in the 100-150lb range, except one boar I killed with the 44 that was right at 225lbs.
It should work just fine inside of 50 yds.

Leverevolution and buffalo bore are 2 totally different mentalities when it comes to ammo,
Lever is “fast”, light, thin skinned bullet that IMO can sometimes not full penetrate at close range and break apart upon impact. Think of it as a fast moving Porsche hitting a wall, depending how hard the wall is , it might not go through but sometimes it will.
Buffalo bore is bore about the heavy bullet some of the Barnes stuff is light but that is a solid copper bullet and expands differently with a higher weight retention upon impact and penetration ( almost 100%). The RN and flat nose ammo they sell is heavy and has the ballistics of a flying school bus but if that school bus hits a wall its going to go through.
Remember pistol ammo kills differently that rifle ammo as it carries little “shock” due to its lower velocity. If your don’t spine or head shoot most of the time your going to track blood.
I shot a pig 3 times with a 500 S&w all in the chest cavity, it was dead from the first shot but it stood still so I kept shooting till it fell over.

It’s a pig, quit overthinking it. I’d shoot a hog in the ass with a BB gun if I thought it would get gangrene and die.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

</font id=“quote”></blockquote id=“quote”>ha ive also taken one out while squirrel hunting with a .22 and shot it in the head, but when i went to recover it it got back up and was smacked back down with a .44 magnum revolver. looking at the 1st hit the bullet hole was just behind the skull so i knocked it out for a bit, but didnt hit the brain and finish it 1st shot. no worries salty if i see a hog im shooting bullets or arrows at it, but im mostly curious about the .357 as a brush gun and how much i should count on following blood for a non head shot vs DRT.
Talk about tough - watch this boar come out from under the dogs and phook up the hunter. Even if he had a rifle instead of a blade I don’t know he’d have been able to knock him out.

I’ve only shot them with 30.06 and the exit wounds are well, blown open.
fully agree on the massive 30-06 exit wounds! the WMA im hunting in georgia is pretty similar to where i hunted in Francis Marion to where there its a lot of pine forest with a lot of undergrowth. not exactly going to take a running shot with a scoped 30-06 when i jump them up (hapens with deer and pigs), but much more comfortable doing so with the open sight .357. getting one with my bow is also on the list.
I have killed a ton of hogs with a .357 pistol. I have no doubt a rifle will kill them equally well with proper bullet (158gr jacketed soft point) placement.
