On sale at Academy sports, is this a good fishing kayak?
Mornin’;
…that’s what was once called the Heritage SeaDart 14’. It’s a Fast Sea Yak. Not really set up for fishin’, and hard to set up for fishin’(not impossible by any means, just harder). I have it’s big brother the 17’ Expedition. Great secondary stability, less then average to average intial stability (it has the feel of a sit in touring yak…i.e. “tipsy”).Steers great, when you lean it turns, unlike most SOT’s. That beam listing is misleadin’. I’d go measure it. I bet it is more like 24-25", the sponsons are probably 28". Are you an experienced Yak fisherman? …and what size are you? If your a big guy those sponsons will be draggin’ in the water the whole time (slowing down hull speed). The Heritage RedFish is a better all around fishin’ platform (I own a RedFish 14, great boat). But the Dart will out run it all day long, …it’s the fastest yak I’ve paddled…and I build wood sea touring yaks. I’ve posted reviews and riggin’ pics at the Texas forum and the KFS Forum. Check em out. I paid $500, for the 17’…what’s Academy askin’?
…I see it is listed as $399 on their website. Great deal. If your under 200# and have experience paddlin’, go for it.
