Just started Shad fishing last year, what a blast… Had one real nice gentleman give me a sabiki rig so my daughter could catch some herring…(thanks again) she had a blast…But we threw them all back. What do folks keep them for? thanks
I vacuum pack them whole ( 4 or 5 to each bag ) to use for Catfish bait later in the year…
Are the herring running yet
Do the herring hold up well in the vacuum pack or do they get soft and mushy when you put them on the hook?
If you keep them live in a bait tank they make excellent striper bait

They are plenty firm enough after thawing once. I don’t save ( refreeze ) them though, since thawing twice makes them to soft.
