Hewes Tailfisher 17 review...

Have been meaning write up something for a while, there was a request or two for a review a few months ago…

I ordered a Hewes Tailfisher 17 from Tailwalker Marine during the boat show…I have had it for about 2 months now and I could not be happier…This skiff is top shelf…It handles, fishes, and poles with ease…

It is a flatter bottom tunnel hull, and I was originally curious as to how it would handle our rougher water. Like all small boats, you will get the occasional spray, but for the most part the hull is dry…I have had it in 1.5’chop and it has felt secure and stable.

The hull does only draft 7" as advertised…2 people, full tank, and gear…I am told that on plane it will run shallower due to the tunnel, but have yet to attempt it…

The hull is very trim sensitive, especially in relation to the motor trim…the trim tabs help to level and stabilize, but due to the flatter hull do not assist when quartering into a chop…Trimming up the motor will allow you to stay dry…

The 70 Yamaha pushes the skiff about 35-36mph @ 5400rpms, and cruises at 24-26mph @ around 4100rpm…and is very stingy with the gas…also a 55lb 12V Minn Kota moves the boat with ease…around 3-3.5mph wide open…

I am still getting comfortable on the poling tower…this is the first boat I have had that could be easily poled, so there is a learning curve…From what I have experienced the hull tracks very well, and turns on a dime…there is a small amount of clap when heading into a chop, but none whatsoever in calmer water…the hull and motor are only 1200lbs so you can pole for a while without fatigue…

Layout is exceptional, and very fishable…and it fits in the garage…

I am going to the river in the AM and will take some pics to add to this thread then…

If I haven’t answered a question feel free to ask or email me…or call Fred at Tailwalker Marine, He will hook you up…

I now own your old boat and love it to death!
