Hey Y'all (not a report)

Well I finally made the move up here from Walterboro. We decided to buy a house in Chapin, about a block or so from the lake. Can’t wait to meet some of y’all and learn how to catch some fish. “Reely” ready for some better weather.

Welcome to the area. That boat should be great for stripers on the lake.

Welcome to the area. Don’t wait for nice weather, some of the biggest fish are caught in January and February. Usually on the worst days.

The worse the weather the better the fishing this time of year! Rain, snow, wind, cant beat the winter for catching big striper. And a lot less bass boats!!!

I’ll definitely have to get with some of y’all sometime. I’ll spend some time browsing this forum and try to educate myself about these Stripers. Haven’t dragged my boat up here yet, but will probably do so here shortly. Had an old timer telling me yesterday about the Perch, said thats what I should be fishing for.

Welcome aboard…Alot of people on here fish for perch and now is a good time to do so. I have done it a number of times but just do not get that much enjoyment out of it. Chasing the stripes is what I love…look forward to seeing your reports…

The perch fishing is fun for me. Half of the fun comes from the other fish that bite the Berry’s spoons. I’ve caught some real nice stripers, catfish, largemouth, crappie and bream while fishing the spoons for perch. Most of the time if you find the perch they are more than happy to bite. I’ve seldom seen them with lockjaw. I’m getting pretty close to being an old timer myself, but fishing seems to be helping me stay young. Just curious… how old is an old timer? Maybe I’m one and just don’t know it! If you want to catch perch you can catch them on just about anything. They’ll hit cutbait, worms, minnows and of course my favorite 1/2 ounce Berry’s spoons. Just a word of advice from my past experience, change out the standard Berry’s treble hooks to larger hooks because the bigger fish can bend the packaged hooks straight.

I fished with Fogman today. Very cold and cloudy, but not too windy. We caught a good mixture of stripers, largemouth, crappie, catfish and of course white perch. I kept the 5 catfish and weighed them in a 5 gallon bucket. They and the bucket together weighed almost 37 lbs. I’m not sure how many other fish we caught. Maybe Fogman will report on them after he thaws out. It was so cold that the line was freezing on my rod guides between fish. They hit live herring and three different spoons today. What a fun day!!!

Hey thanks for all the info yall. Spoon master yall are hardcore, it was cold today. I had to go back to the other house an get more junk. Hopefully I’ll have the boat up soon, and if nothing else take me a slow cold ride around. Hey Kicknfish have you ever put in at eptings landing? Its right next to our neighborhood. I’m assuming it would be best for me to use the one off of Wessinger.

I used to know Mr. Ralph Epting and deal with him on a regular basis. He owned and operated Epting’s for years. Again… I’m wondering if I’m an old timer?? His grandson is Chris, a very good fisherman. If you put in at Epting’s ask them what is biting, what area of the lake and how deep. Most of the time winter fishing, especially for white perch, is knowing where to start.

I’m not hardcore, but my friend Fogman sure is. He pretty much did all of the work on our fishing trip yesterday. All I had to do was show up and be ready to wind in fish. I’m not really that good of a fisherman, but I tend to get lucky a lot. If I can’t be good, I’ll settle for lucky. One of the big catfish I landed yesterday was only hooked in it’s whisker. That’s luck!

Haha spoon master i was trying to avoid that response. But for what its worth, I’m guessing he was in his mid 70’s. Im 34 for any curious. I’m not really a good fisherman either. I was just starting to learn some things in the saltwater. Never got the chance to fish as a kid. Bought me a boat 6-7 years ago and decided to jump in head first. I got pretty successful at catching and releasing big sharks. I could always fill the cooler with decent whiting. Offshore, all i ever did was bottom fish. Got some pretty good numbers for that. Fresh water, fishing off a bank with a cane pole is my limit of what I know. Lol. Ill definitely be asking a lot o questions.
First being what kind of terminal tackle do yall use the most for the stripers? Line strength, rod class, and what type of reels? Im assuming i can still use my TLD25’s for pulling planers? Again thanks yall.
