HHI July 9-12

Im headed to HHi in a couple weeks and want to go fish! I know the basics but usually surf/pier fish. I was looking into rentign a kayak while i was down there, any input on succes rates/species and eases of use for a noob in those waters? I seriously appreciate your time1

Don’t go with the “kayak guides” behind the salty dog!
They took me out as a tropical storm was blowing in across two foot chop a few years ago. Quickly I called the trip and explained to them how I felt about it.
I also tried to rent a kayak last year and there is a place right before you cross over from bluffton that will let you rent a kayak for a few days for a decent price.
Good luck

Far better it is to dare mighty things to win glorious triumphs even though checkered with failure, than to take ranks with those poor spirits who never enjoy much nor suffer much because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.

I spent a month down there last year for work and brought my kayak down so I could fish when I had free time and really enjoyed it. There is a launch off of Marshland Rd (next to the Old Oyster Factory Restaurant) that is perfect for kayak fishing. I spent a number of evenings there and caught plenty of reds with an occasional trout. At low tide you can catch plenty of shrimp and mullet at the landing with a cast net (I was there in August). Also I noticed very few motorized boats in the area and typically had the water to myself. Another plus is the Restaurant usually has live music on the outside patio so you get some tunes while fishing in the evenings.

I also spent a good bit of time surf fishing and had great luck on the beach jetties on the northside of the island. I caught numerous species on mixed bait and had great success catching a number of flounder by fishing a mudder a close to the rocks as possible. I was just out there this past weekend and there were thousands of mudders in the water near there and so you should be able to catch some in a cast net as well.

Good luck and keep me posted. I was down there last weekend and didn’t bring my rods but wish I would have.

Hey FishOn06…Let me know when your trip to HHI gets closer and maybe I can scare up some people for you to kayak with up there…or maybe I can bring you a “loaner” to fish with if I get a second one by then…

Will trade you some S.E. Saltwater Fishing Tips for some NC and SC ones up around Charlotte!!

Hey Adam…I just posted a link to what I think is he canoe…and it should work in the marshes and creeks, but I would avoid open water and wind and large wakes…after all, it appears to be a canoe and not really a kayak…

Lots of good reasons to fish from canoes and they are great for camping trips too…LOTS of my GA and TN buddies have them…JYJ

this is the yak, its a discontinued model, but its def a yal
