HHI Kayak Marsh Fishing Report

Hi folks. I rarely post on here but thought I would share a little.

We own a place on HHI so I fish there quite a bit. I do a lot of surf fishing due to family commitments but do occasionally break away for a day to fish the marsh. I went twice last week. I caught nothing but sharks on the first outing and actually saw the biggest shark I’ve ever seen in the marsh. It was very conservatively 6+ feet.

The second trip started poorly with lots more small sharks but ended well with 3 specks.

Initially, I was using finger mullet (live) as that’s what I was able to catch in the cast net. I had planned to set a homemade trap for mud minnows but didn’t have time and the tide was wrong where I had access. On the second day, I quit to change locations and bought some mud minnows.

It made all the difference. The sharks ignored the mud minnows but the trout loved them. I floated them under a popping cork off a point. It was a rising tide into a slack tide.

I hope that helps someone.

Erik

Any size to your trout? Sounds like you had fun out there…

Lewis,

Sorry for the delayed report. Two were keepers and one was just shy of legal. I’m pretty confident that I could find them again and catch more in the right conditions. The Sharks were still there but were too busy chasing the mullet to bother with the mud minnows and that’s what made the difference the second time around.
