Hickory Knob State Park

Headed there for the weekend next week and was looking for some advice! Are the stripers biting? Bream? Bass on beds? Hot colors even maybe? I have never been there and any suggestions are welcomed and appreciated! Thanks…also posted in freshwater section but it doesn’t seem to get as many reads or love as over here!

Anyone fished this lake before, Lake Thurmond?

Some of the guys that post in the Striper Fishing forum fish there a bit. Post there and you can probably get some some info on the striper fishing.

We have stayed and fished there but it’s been a while… Lots of people fish around the bridge there…and we caught some nice crappy from the dock there. Nice place to go.

Oh yeah…we took our little boat at the time and a floating light… When we fished off the dock they were all around the light. There’s a little tackle store there

Use to live in upstate and fished lake Clark’s Hill, now know as lake Thurmond a fair amount… Striped fishing is great this time of year all you need is some fresh herring or some large minnows if you don’t have access to a good bait tank. Friend of mine said lots of fish at the (**() right now caught over 30 last week first few hours of daylight being the best… Hope this helps been a couple of years since I fished the lake, but talk to friend that fish the lake regularly…

the month of may is a hot month for the stripers most are ready to bite the blue back, about anywhere in the lake. fish free line or down rods. fish will be larger on the hill than murry, that is most of the time. cant say much for the large mouth. waste all my bait on stripers. find some small bream about 3 or 4 inches, they will make great striper and cat fish bait fished live as you would blue back . good luck

Key on main lake points for bass, hybrids, and stripers. If you want to kill them. Have a bait tank full of hearing and flip some up on the points under a cork. The blue back hearing are spawning on the points and the predator fish are there.
Zara Spook or jerk baits for artificial.

Hickory Knob is in the center of the lake! I have been catching good hybreds up the Broad river on cut herring and down the lake at the dam on live bait! read fish off points in 20-25’ water and drop baits 3 cranks of bottom be sure to chum and beat the bottom of the boat with your oar, realy makes a differance!

Hey thanks for the advise! Does one buy the herring or do you chase birds and throw a cast net?

Buy it. Its not like finding pogies. Most are caught at night under lights. You can do that.

Well…we had one helluva good time at that park and lake! What an awesome place! We didn’t end up catching any striper although where we bought bait they told us there were 3 striper tourneys and 2 bass! Well we had our own little tourney; 5 for most fish (not bream) and 5 on biggest(any species)! Well only 3 of us caught a keeper sized fish so big fish takes all…so yours truly catches a 4ish lb channel cat on a suspending jerk bait and brings in the cash LOL imagine that huh! The 80$ covers almost half of the tire I had to replace after a side wall blow out on the way up! It happens though right?! All in all a good trip with good people!

Hey pen if you are going to be tent camping see if you can get site 13! It’s the best one there with its own beach area and not a steep cliff to get to the water. If you go RV style then probably 10 11 12 14 in that are right on the water too! It’s all hilly, but a sweet place!
