High Tide - Motor Recommendation

My son and I are doing a total make over on a High Tide 1503. We can’t decide between the Yamaha 40hp or 50hp fourstroke. Any ■■■■■■■■ or experience would be appreciated.

I had an 18ft Jon with a 25hp & it would push me & gear 20mph. I can only imagine what a 40 or 50 would push a HT.

There is no replacement for displacement.Get the biggun.

I had a 1998 16’ High Tide with a 60 Evinrude on it, 2stroke. It would run like a scalded dog, around 36-38 top end. That being said, with the lower hole shot of the 4strokes and added weight, I think that the best option is the 50. Its true, the max is the min, when talking about outboards. You might also benefit from a hydrofoil on it.

Mo power !!!

I am fragile. Not like a flower. But like a bomb.

Thanks for the ■■■■■■■■ guys. I just wanted to make sure that the 50hp was not overkill or too dangerous.

I just redid a 1503 and it originally had a 60 Mercury 2 stroke. Would run 43mph and was not overpowered at all. Now I have 40 Mercury 2 stroke and it runs 35. I think 40/50/60 is a great combo. Do yourself a favor and put smart tabs on it. Makes it handle so much better.

“Darn, I wish I’d have got the smaller motor”…

…said nobody ever.

Smart tabs are an excellent investment for any small boat. Especially if your hull likes to porpoise a little bit. It’ll calm that right down and make a huge impact in ride quality, and they won’t break the bank.

I’d love to see pictures of the high tide build. They are great little boats with tons of really cool potential depending on how you outfit them.

There’s one for sale on facebook right now. It would almost be worth it to call this guy and talk to him about his. He has a 60hp on his. I don’t know if you can follow this link or not, but its a 2008 1503 in Monks Corner.

And also, are you going with a center console or side? Mine was a side console and I really loved how much extra room you gained with it. The center console makes it feel really tight to me on a small boat. Something to consider.

Thank you for all the great ■■■■■■■■. Feels like the old days when we use to post on here. Tight lines to all.

I ended up going with a tiller and it saves so much room in such a small boat. Had a poling platform built too. I really like the extra power of the 60, but had engine failure and got a 40 from a friend for free.

You can’t beat a tiller haha. I wouldn’t give you a nickel for one of them new fangled steering wheels.Like you said, they take up too much room.

We’ve got a Yamaha 40 2 stroke on a 14 super v & it will push it about 38 with my son in it. With me & him with fishing stuff, cooler, etc about 35.

Here’s one with a 50hp:

Where did you get your poling platform built?

I removed a whale tail from my 2006 Sea Pro 180CC and added SmartTabs. Gained 8 mph!
I did have to replace the shocks periodically however.

The Hightide 1503 is stern heavy. The weight difference between a 40hp and 50hp 4 stroke
Yami is about 50 lbs. Performance difference between the 40 and 50 is not much difference. At low speeds, the boat will porpoise regardless of the motor. I have had two 1503’s. Both with 40 2 strokes. Very good boats and the engines were also… Just can’t get those 2 strokes anymore. So sad…
