High Voltage on 90 Yamaha?

I have a 90 HP Yamaha that I have had for 15 years and have had great service and still runs strong. Recently the Garmin depth finder displayed a message of high voltage and shut down (VHS and GPS operate find at all RPMs) While idling the depth finder works, but when RPMs are inceased the depth finder displays the eror message of high voltage. All of the electronics have been on the boat for years and operated without issue / are wired through a fuse block to the battery. The voltage gauge while idling sits in the middle but when RPMS are increased the gauge is pegged.
The question: is the voltage reguator bad because the voltage is high on the gauge? Should it be replaced and is it a major issue to replace? The motor runs great at all RPMs so I have no issues running I just don’t have a depth finder! I replaced power cord on depth finder and that didn’t help. I thought of wiring the depth finder straight to he battery to see if that would work? Any information is apppreciated!

You can use an inexpensive volt/ohm meter to check your voltage. If it really is to high (as opposed to your depth finder lying), then you are cooking you batteries and your electronics. 'Sounds like voltage regulator is shot.

Anyone know if replacing a voltage is major surgery or does it need to go to the shop? Thanks

Year?..2 stroke, or 4?

…Politicians aren’t the “Oldest Profession”, but the results are still the same!!!

1989 2 stroke
Thanks

need to determine if its a voltage regulator or a stator, but definately have an issue that needs to be fixed

Thanks, trying to deternmine if this is something that is bolt on and connect wires or a shop visit.

Thanks again
