My grandmother lives there and I go fishing there a lot. For the best fly fishing close to the town get on Main St headed towards Franklin and drive past the lake and Dry Falls. The Cullasaja River will be on your left. After the falls, you can pick any pull-off area to park and just hop the guard rail and go down the bank to the river. You’ll need a NC license which you can get at Reeves Hardware on Main St. on your way out of town. Make sure to get a trout stamp with that.

If you don’t want to pay a bunch for an out of state license, you can drive over the line into SC and fish the stream that runs next to the SC fish hatchery. Take 64 towards Cashiers, take a right at the main stoplight in Cashiers onto 107. Follow this across the state line and a few miles later look for a sign for the fish hatchery on the right. This leads to a very windy road down to the hatchery. You will see the hatchery on the right and the stream on the left, drive over the bridge and park to the left of the hatchery building. It’s well stocked (obviously) and pretty good for wading. Pretty close quarters with trees overhead so usually have to stick to short roll casts.

Hope this helps.

Take no prisoners! … catch and release

Chatooga. Go to Cashiers head south on hwy 107. SC is stocked pretty heavy. NC side is not stocked used to be good fishing. Caddis, hares ears, pheasant tails sizes 14-20. You can also take 107 north to through Cullowee to the Tuckaseegee. 5 miles of DH (catch and release) fishing with about 30,000 trout stocked since October (some real HOGS</font id=“red”> too). Tuck is great it would be my pick is the generators are not turning. You can call 1.866.332.5253 listen to both messages for the east fork and west fork. Hope this helps. Be safe and have fun.

I personally recommend the tooga (Above Burrells Ford…if you want a challenge…DH if you want easy fish). Get there really early in the morning and you might be able to find a big brown hanging out from the previous night.

Biggest brown I have ever seen up there was well over 20 inches (this is above Ellicot Rock in NC).

I couple of months ago this fellow posted a picture of a brown he caught up in the wild section.

Course another section you might want to try is above Bull Pen Run.

Check out a topo map and if you have any question give a holler.

Cheers,

Chris B.

If you’re looking for trout, be aware that all hatchery supported waters in NC are closed during the month of March for stocking. They re-open the first Saturday in April. The Delayed Harvest and Wild Trout waters are open during this same period.

If you go to the Chattooga in SC, you’ll be sure to catch stockers above the Hwy 28 bridge. There have been a number of car break-ins here so make sure you lock your vehicle and don’t leave anything of value in sight.

The fishing is much more technical and challenging above the the DH section (Big Bend, Burrell’s Ford, Ellicott Rock, etc.)

Good luck

WOW thats the biggest brown I’ve seen pulled out of the Rock section.

my grandparents live there also, but in Highland Falls Country Club and the lakes on the golf course are all stocked with monster bass, trout, bream, and carp but ya gotta be with a member

strip…strip…FISH ON!

I’ve seen bigger ones but never managed to even get a cast to one. During the summer months some buddies of mine used to take snorkeling gear up there and poke around in some of the larger plunge pools. Saw lots of water snakes, and 10-14" browns and bows (these being the biggest on average…once though I did see the granddaddy brown up above the rock).

thanks guys for all the help. unfortunatly, when i got up there this weekend my reel was screwed up and i didnt have time to fix it. but all is well now, and im going back this weekend. my girlfriend has a house up there and her grandparents live in highland falls country club flyfishn, so if your ever up there let me know. great course by the way, played it this weekend. did a coupe of good hikes though, whiteside, glenn falls down into the valley, and a few others. i’ll try to convince the girlfriend to stop on the way and let me kick around the chatooga before we get into NC. I’ll let ya know how it goes.

if your in highland falls go to the lake on hole number 5. go to the left corner of the lake if your back is to the course and proceed to catch bream then leave them on and wait for mr. big bass to come along. quite a show! theres some bigg carp and trout too.
