I am headed to Hilton Head Aug. 9th to do some fishing with some friends before school starts back. I’m bringing my Action Craft 1720 SE. I have never fished around Hilton Head before and would like to have a few spots in mind before I get out on the water.
I am an avid fisherman but my two friends are not and they are excited to catch a few fish similar to ones they have seen in my pictures. We are from Tennessee and I want to show them how great the salt water fishing I always talk about is!
We are looking to catch red and black drum, trout, blues, etc… Probably wouldn’t mind having fun catching a couple sharks too.
Can I get any suggestions on good spots in and around the Hilton Head area to give a try? Thanks for any and all help!
I fish HHI a lot but I’m limited to a kayak in the marsh and surf fishing. I will be back in a week. There are plenty of Reds but they’ve been pretty elusive for me this year. Use mud minnows under a float around the oyster beds. I caught a Blue in the marsh the last time I went which really surprised me. I was floating along the grass near the oyster beds. I catch them regularly in the surf.
If you want to target sharks, you can see them cruising the marsh at low tide pushing bait fish against the bank. They are 4’ - 5’ but I’m not sure if that’s what you’re looking to catch. If you want bigger ones, there are plenty of threads about some monsters, including tigers that you could access with your boat. I don’t cover much ground as I’m limited to paddling. The surf is full of fish and they’re easy to catch.
The common misconception is that HHI is barren for surf fishing.
I just watched a great video of a Jack Crevalle caught in Calibogue Sound. Look under the “Inshore Reports” on here. I’m sorry that I can’t offer more.
