Hobie Mirage (pedal) Kayaks

I have seen a little bit about these kayaks that have the apparatus you can pedal. The reviews I’ve seen look like people are throwing away their paddles after getting one- much faster, and easier in wind/current. My impression is that it’s more than a gimmick. Anyone used or have one of these? Thoughts?

Stonefly, I work for a dealer of hobie boats here in charleston. My first thought on these boats a few years ago was “gimmick” also. Then I tried one. AWESOME BOAT FOR FISHING. I would “throw away the paddle”, but these boats are very versatile. The name of our shop is Time Out (in Mt. P actually) and we could arrange a demo or rental for you if you would like to try one out. My recommendation would be the Adventure (16ft) or the new Revolution (13 ft.) Call us here at the store or drop by if you want to check them out. 388-6266

Thanks DD. All the reviews I’ve seen say they are fast, and that pedaling frees your hands for other tasks (fishing). Also, I could see the optional sail opening up some other possibilities for getting around. I’ll swing by sometime in the next few weeks and check it out and ask some questions.

Thanks!

Hey Stonefly - I’ve owned an Outback SUV for about 6 months now, up in the Pawleys area. It’s a fantastic fishing platform, stable with lots of space. You won’t believe how it moves with the pedals until you try it. It also steers with a very light touch on the rudder. You’ll want to keep the paddle for tight spots and backing up, but that’s about it. It’s not a pleasant boat to paddle, too wide and too heavy.

One word of caution - Hobie had some mold problems at the front of the opening for the pedal drive unit. They are mailing out fiberglass reinforcement kits for current owners. I understand the mold issue has been resolved. If you go shopping, I recommend inquiring about a boat from the improved mold. If not, at least make sure the dealer installs the reinforcement kit before purchasing, it’s an awkward fix. Still, don’t let that scare you off, it’s a great boat.
