scouted around several spots and pretty sure i found more sign of hogs than i did deer, however after putting one in the freezer and knowing theyre extremely destructive i have no problem stacking up a few more. ive found plenty of rooted up areas and 1 or 2 spots theyve been wallowing in the mud along with a few trails in thick brush with plenty of hog droppings. ive done a dog/knife hunt before and got one, but as for still hunting ive heard from many that they tend to be noctournal. anyone have any experience still hunting hogs and which areas will be best to try to bust them during the day? not asking for anybodys spots found plenty of signs on my own…just wondering which type of area would be best to go after them. perhaps the mud wallow since its still hot out and they might come to cool off?
Ohio, if youre after the hogs on public land go put in some time scouting around the wambaw and waterhorn wmas. Ive killed plenty of them out there with my bow. Ive never had any luck out of a tree stand. Get a good gps, mark the truck and spot and stalk. Dont get lost out there or you are screwed! Find low swampy areas that are holding water and youve found hogs(snakes too!). The hogs out there hate my bowtech…lol
they move more in afternoon. just find a food source, spot and stalk is fun too. Just keep the wind in your face. They can’t see well, but they make up for it with their eyes and nose.
The best thing ive done when I lived down there, mix jello or kool aid packets with your corn inside the feeder, set it to go off mid day, stalk into it n sit the afternoon on it.
BOW HUNTING, IT’S DONE WITH YOUR BRAINS, NOT YOUR DOGS!
i like that idea of mixing sweets with the corn…however just read this years regs and not legal 2 bait in FM. would there be much of a chance of them coming to the mud wallows ive found to cool off as hot as its been? nothing too big but there were deer tracks around the mud mixed in with the hogs too…that area at least has my attention and ill arrow whatever comes by first but have an intrest in hogs since its something new to me and need taken out…plus i figured out that boar shoulders make awesome pulled pork and some people even preferred my homemade boar jerky to what i make with deer…that one suprised me!
set up on the wallows. it is hot and they will be heading there to cool off. they have no sweat glands
Go out and buy a the cheapest trail camera you can. If you want buy a lock for it. The Wildlife Innovations ones are cheap and you can get a lock for them. Put it up in an area that you think there are hogs. Leave it for at least two weeks before you check it or go near the area. Any sooner and they will not be around much after you leave your scent putting it up. Move it around and see which areas have the most and what times they come out. A lot of times hog sign in moist/swampy ground can look a lot fresher than it really is. Just because you see sign doesn’t mean they hang out there often. I’ve wasted a lot of my time in FM hunting “fresh” sign. If you want dump out some grape koolaid in front of the camera in the mud. Don’t do this during season or less than 11 days before you hunt the area. Then it is hunting over bait. I don’t think it is illegal to “bait” a camera. Just to hunt over or around bait for 10 days after all of it is removed. Don’t tell anyone that I told you to do it. I, of course, have never left any food product in the FM. Season or not, hunting or not.

Listen to this fellow, he knows what he’s doing on the bacon. Last one I killed was in a big mud hole late in the day.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

i do have a trail camera and its well past its prime so even though i will make efforts to keep it from getting stolen i wont be too heartbroken if i dont see it again as it takes a bit to getting it to work right half the time anymore. i dont know about public land but a trick i did back home was to wipe my sweaty, nasty hands all over my camera and sure enough the deer always stared it down the first few times, but then they later associated my scent with a little black box that has corn and apples in front of it and could have cared less. granted i wont be baiting in fm but anyone else ever hear of or try that trick? definately wont be baiting come sept 1 and even “shooting lanes” all i do there is tuck a branch or 2 back without breaking it. dont know when ill actually get the camera up but ill definately try it out!
Ohio, when you get the chance for your shot make sure you take a quartering away shot with a bow. Hogs shoulders are nothing like a deer. I shoot a bowtech old glory that is a 70 lb draw with 100 grain muzzys and it won’t pass through a hogs shoulder. I bet that mud hole you found will produce for you. Good luck when you head out.
If you have land that you can feed on, sour some corn in a 5 gallon bucket. Dig a hole in the ground that is in proximity to the wet areas/wallows as mentioned above. Put the corn in the hole and mix in cheap grape kool-aide. Get a pump sprayer and put in diesel fuel or burnt motor oil. In the same area spray oil/diesel on the surrounding pine trees. You have created a haven for the hogs. They will rub the bark off the trees for the fuel/oil. If you just want to kill them and have no luck trapping, hogs get smart quick, dig a 4’ deep x 3 x 6 hole and cover with 4x8 lattice, limbs, straw, and corn. They can’t seem to figure that one out.
