Hogfish and a black jack

Made a bottom trip on Tuesday with Black Angus (Quincy) and a full crew. Made bait very quickly right on the beach in front of Morris Island , Thanks Ray. Donned The raingear and headed into the storms that were stacked about 30 miles offshore. Ran to the ledge on a calm ocean. We had a day of firsts! Quincy got his first hog fish, and I caught a fish that I could not identify. I knew it was some type of Jack, but had never caught one like this before. We ended up with eight grouper, limits of pinks and B’s and a whole slew of other bottom critters. All in all a great trip with great company.

a fish paul can’t ID - must be an alien!

googling it looks like there is such thing as a “black jack” - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_jack_(fish)

looks a bit lighter than yours but who knows. Says to look out for ciguatera

Is that a lionfish in the bottom left corner of the cooler?

God bless the “ignore” function.

Yes it is we seem to catch them on every single bottom trip now. Two trips back we had three of them

Those things are delicious!!! That looks like a pretty good size one too. We bought some (not as big as that one) at a fish market in Florida last year and roasted them whole. The meat was white and sweet. They actually smelled like shellfish. Great table fare! Granted, I’m not excited about seeing them showing up here.

Paul, Your really looking better! When I was in the US Navy we used to catch a jack that looked like that around the Canary Islands and off west Africa

We catch those black jacks on the reefs on the drops in the USVI. Cool looking fish with some awesome colors. Dark yellow and dark greens especially around the throat area.

My nephew caught one of those a few years back. Don’t think there is a state record for it.

Paul, great catch. I nearly fell over when I read there was a fish that you couldn’t ID.

They are very yummy (my wife actually prefers them to grouper) and I would encourage anybody who comes by them to eat them or at least kill them…but don’t throw them back. They’ve been here quite a while as we see them diving all the time. I’m very intrigued that they’re being caught on rod and reel now as I’ve never heard of that before. Not sure what that means as far as the fishery goes but those things are definitely bad news for the ecosystem.

I assume you guys are both talking about the hog fish? I know all about hog fish as I catch them quite regular on rod and reel. I was asking about the blackjack as I have never caught one before

I was talking about the lionfish. Hogfish are absolutely delicious too. Never ate (or caught) a blackjack.

That sucks. Like I said though, they are absolutely delicious. Eat’em up!

I didn’t know that Hogfish could be taken on rod & reel. how do you fish for them? tackle & bait?

Thanks,
John

Paul may prove me wrong but everyone I’ve ever met that regularly caught hogfish on rod and reel weren’t quick to reveal their setup/secrets.

After 30 years of trying different techniques I finally figured it out about a year ago, I have taken half a dozen including one that was within 4 ounces of the world record. With that being said the bait that I use is… Unicorn horns, and the tackle is fairy dust and spider webs . Those that fish with me quite regular will never divulge how we catch them but I will say the one in this picture was caught on a live cigar minnow, Which was a first for me
