Hole in the dash

Last year I bought a Garmin 545 and flush mounted it in the dash beside the controls. Now I am wishing that I would have used the bracket it came with and put it on top of my console. Is there some way or someone who can make a nice looking box to put in the would be hole if I were to move it? Maybe like a waterproof box for cell phones or keys? I want something that is gonna look nice.

I’m in a similar situation. I have the 4" round Suzuki SMS/Lowrance gauge in my dash and it is a POS! The fuel consumption is so far out of whack (even after multiple re-calibrations) that it says I am burning 6-7 times my average fuel burn and shows I am out of gas before my fuel gauge even bounces off of full. Not only that, it doesn’t monitor even 1/2 of the functions that the salesperson said it would. I want to remove it, but don’t want the 3-1/2" diameter hole looking at me, so I am thinking about removing it and having someone patch it with fiberglass and gel-coat.

I wish I could find a round tube of some sort to put in there as that would be a great place to store my registration, spare drain plug and a few other odds & ends.

Lesson learned…I will never install a new gauge or electronic device before testing it for several trips to make sure it works the way it is supposed to. That $350 for the unit, time to install it and the cost to repair the hole would have bought ALLOT of gas!

A link to this site was posted a couple weeks ago…lots of good products like hatches and glove boxes. This page link has glove boxes on it.

I just ordered a door hatch from them, good company.

flush mounting looks great but I installed my HDS 10 on top using the bracket. It would have just been too low had I flush mounted it, plus I want to use the space for a “glove box”. I haven’t been able to find anything that I would want to put in there. I am probably going to need to get someone to make something for me.

I’ve got a Northstar fuel management gauge and mines way off too. It was on my boat when I got it but I haven’t even tried to recalibrate it. I have the book and I think it’s very simple. I just haven’t done it. ??? No big deal.

Being superstitious is bad luck.

I was able to make some really cool storage areas for keys/cell phones etc out of 4" pvc and “bung” ends. With a little experimentation I was able to fit Bomar 4" deck plates (with the clear covers)onto the pvc and mount them in existing holes. Also made fire extinguisher halders the same way. Turned out real sporty.

13skulls,
Got any pics?

Actually yes. Unfortunately I am technology challenged. I’ll ask one of my teenagers to help me post them. Give me a day or so.Or if you are near Johns Island come by and take a look.
