I am having a wierd problem with the lights in my house flickering. I need to get an electrician in to take a look. I saw a comercial on TV about a ‘Mr Sparky’ and I’m thinking about giving them a call.
Does anyone have any good recomendations for a local guy?
PM sent… if you don’t get it send me one with your email or phone number.

all the lights or just 1-2 rooms? overhead lights or plugged in
lamps?
what kind of bulbs in the lights?

Try Bemco electric.
It started out with just the overhead lights in the bedrooms. Now it seems to be the wall outlets also. My clock radio looses power and just blinks sometimes now. We have the regular incandescent bulbs.

Have you called SCE & G or whoever your service is with??
They will send someone out in a matter of an hour or 2. They can place a device in your meter socket (that will only take a moment to test) to see if your neutral is going bad between your socket and transformer. It will test each Hot Leg as well.
Common overhead service trouble is squirrels chewing on the aluminum (exposed) neutral wire. Old underground services have alot of issues too. (not from squirrels tho).
Call your service provider first!!!
An open neutral can burn up every thing in your home.

agreed, sounds like a loose or damaged neutral, it could be in the meter can or main panel, neither of which most people should mess with unless you know what you’re doing

Thanks for the info everyone. I never thought of calling SCE&G about it. We do have the underground wires in this neighborhood.

I would call them right away if it was me. They will come right out 24/7. They will check the connections in meter socket and surely place a piece of test equipment in socket to check the UD service.
This will only take a few minutes for them to check this and is free. (well, not exactly as that is what you pay for each month).
Just curious, do you notice that this is worse when someone turns on something like a toaster, microwave or blowdryer?
Good luck and let us know.

This…
Could be on the utility side of your service…that’s what happened to me. If that’s the case, the electrician cannot touch it…you’ll have to call your power provider.
“Never argue with an idiot…he will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.”
I did call SCE&G. They checked the service coming to the house and said it was fine. Flat-Out helped me from there. We discovered the ground wire to the meter box had become disconnected from the ground rod going down into the ground. Once we re-attached the ground wire the problems went away. Thanks a million Flat -Out!!!

Glad it was an easy fix for you. Don’t forget to replace the vise grips.

My lights never worked this good!!! Going to Lowes on saturday for the replacement clamp but it’s hard to top the old vice grips.
