Homemade outriggers?

Paying for daycare now so fishing funds get a little tight. Wife will say no go for a new set of outriggers. Anyone ever made any outriggers to put in outside rod holders on t-top?

I have an older pair of 15’ fiberglass telescoping 1-1/8" base outriggers that would work for that. Just sitting around collecting dust.
Or you could get some Bamboo!!

I live near Savannah, but if you want em I’m sure we could work out something…

These work great-cost $100-friends who troll a lot tell me they give a fine presentation of bait.

Those look great, bamboo has been gettin it done for a long time!

Shhhhhhhh

Typically we troll five lines, two flat, two riggers and a wayback + two teasers. Bait is ballyhoo-always:smiley:.
We are occasional off-shore fishermen
seeking mostly Dolphin and Kings in the Summer when they move inshore and the weather is manageable in my small boat.
20-30 miles out is about our limit; we have done well with this rig-caught lots of our target fish.
Bamboo does well green or seasoned; and it’s free for the trouble of cutting it.
$100 was the cost of lines, clips and stainless eye bolts bought in a kit Haddrell’s sells.
Riggers span about 25’.

I had two walmart 12’ surf casting rods that worked fine for several years. I picked up the rods at a yard sale and spent about $50. on eyes, snaps, etc. Only problem was the lines would tangle when I would break them down for storage.

Cut some bamboo the other day. Thanks yall. We will see how it works…going to let them dry out inside my house, then rig them up in april. Hopefully they wont crack. I was thinking about wrapping wire around the ends to try and prevent them from cracking or breaking. Time will tell.

If you have the room, hang them vertical while drying with a weight on the bottom. Tie the fat end to a rafter and a concrete block to the tip and let it dry under tension.

Suddenly I feel bamboozled for what I paid for mine…

b’n’b-I think you will be pleased with your choice.
I am careful not to place too much stress on the
weld securing the rod holder.
Don’t want to break that!

I’ve used a pair of bamboo outrigger’s I made for several years with nary a problem. I run the outrigger line back to the t-top, not the gunnel, as pictured. The bamboo pole are like 11’ & 12’. Most expensive part is the release clips. The bamboo poles have a fairly distinctive sound when the line comes out of the clip…

A friend recently gave me a set of 3 piece aluminum 15’ they’re nice but they are heavier than the bamboo, and I sometimes worry about the stress on the t-top rod holders.

For several years I used a set of gunnel mounted outriggers that I made myself out of collapsible pool poles. They worked great, were very light, and only had about $150 in the whole set-up, including the base inserts that I had to buy. (I already had the bases in the gunnel of the boat)

I have a set of aluminum ones with the elbows. They expand and lock in place by twisting them. Needs new rigging. They are yours for $80
