Hone wiring

Building a new home. What communications infrastructure do I need for TV etc?

Can’t think of any communication wiring but I would set up a place to plug in a generator that is out of the weather.

With all the new blue tooth stuff you don’t need race ways for wireing!

The other posts are about right, with everything going wireless, almost no need. Kind of depends on what/how you plan on using as far as an entertainment system. One thing I did when I built my house was put a 1.5" pipe going up from under the house up to the 2nd floor. I capped off both ends but wanted to have a pathway to run anything I wanted to later on. I did all my own wiring and when the inspector came, he asked what the pies were for since they weren’t tied into the plumbing system. When I told him, he hesitated and said he have to check and see if that met code. Wasn’t sure what that meant and never said another word about it.

Way to vague. Maybe Skinneej will chime in or PM him.

I did text this topic to an engineer at work that is an absolute whiz. He came back with alot…Depending on what you wanna do.

Ethernet Ports, High Amp USB Ports, HDMI and Cat 5 for smart TV, LOL.
Told him I was gonna post his phone number and he was like:angry:!

Again, rattle Skinny’s chain and do it now rather than later. He has a TV on his fridge too:stuck_out_tongue:!

Good luck,

Nothing like hanging out in the kitchen watching a little porn…

Run coax and Cat5 to everywhere you might think a tv will go, I did 2 walls minimum per bedroom and all 4 in the living room on mine. You will thank yourself later when your wife wants to rearrange the room and put the tv on the other wall… quad shield coax and cat5, easy PZ!

You invented a cheap intercom that worked when the power goes out. Pea Pad help you with that?

Thanks .Cat 5 and coax. And gen connection.

I agree with those being 3 essential items, will just add one little note.

Don’t buy big box cable, buy high quality professional grade cables and connectors.

Outlets with USB ports like someone else mentioned are a necessity in todays world.

Nah, that was long before I even knew the Pea existed. I occasionally have ideas of my own. Not always good but, my own.

The last house I built for my self had intercom, speaker, coax, cat five, wires in each room including the bath rooms! Most have never been hooked up! Have a 3 story with a basement and built a 24" x 24" chase from basement to attic which realy came in handy over the years Now we have cell phone, salilite TV with joyes and cant hear one another even with the intercoms. Every one need a 12 wide mobile home it make things easier! I lived in an 8’ wide when I finished my time at USC and not a care in the world but a cold ref. for the PBRs!

Coax and Cat5, as said. Not necessary to terminate all of it at the wall. You can leave it coiled up in the wall, if needed fish it out and install it later.

Consider an exterior HD antenna and other add-ons to eliminate the cable bill, a good antenna can be installed in the attic.

Couple tips:

  • photograph every wall before the insulation goes in. It will help you later when you need to find something.
  • want a low power bill - now is the time, seal every crack, hole and exterior penetration during construction, seal under the sill plate, insulate well, add extra in the attic
  • use insulation for sound proofing, some good areas are between the master BR and other rooms, around bathrooms and on every water drain
  • use an instant water heater if gas is available
  • if gas is available use it for heating and the dryer
  • HVAC is critical, most installers are terrible, it starts with a perfect duct system and that requires a design, then the unit needs to be at least one step above standard
  • if you will ever want a whole house generator, now is the time to add the wiring and exterior connection
  • use high quality windows

Pioneer 197SF

Use rg6 coax and cat6. Cat 5 is pretty obsolete these days. I prefer wired terminations for cable and security but wireless technology has come a long way. You’ll need a couple hdmi’s from your cable/satelite box. If you use a traditional stereo configuration, wired, make sure you remember about bass boxes and sound bars. Be very careful of chases. When making one you create a raceway for fire. Make sure all chases have at least a 2 hour rating to them which can be achieved with proper drywall installation and firecaulking. I would plan for a generator wire to a transfer switch. It is more expensive than wiring into the panel, which is against code anyways and you won’t kill a lineman in a storm.
