I created Hook a Troop two years ago in Murrells Inlet, where we took 35 troops fishing on 10 boats. We had an absolutely awesome day! Was wondering if anyone would like to volunteer to take as many troops as you can hold for a day of fishing?
Most of these guys will be just coming back from 6-9 months of pure misery in the sand box, and I would like to show our appreciation. We have not picked a date, or have any idea where we are going to launch from. We are in the planning stage, seeing if there is any local support.
We will probably try to shoot for end of April, or beginning of May on a weekend. I am active duty at joint base Charleston, and know I can get plenty of people to fill boats… but need to know if I can get any of you to help out! If you can’t financially afford it, let me know, and I can try to help with fuel. You don’t have to run to the GTH, but i am sure they would love that trip. All of us we be plenty happy putting to a close bridge and catching a buzz.
Please HELP!
Chris
If you’re talking about inshore fishing…with someone who does a lot more fishing than catching, count me in. I have a 17footer that can handle two more people somewhat comfortably.
I can volunteer for a saturday. Charleston harbor area out to the jetties or I can do the nearshore reef on calm days. I’d be glad to help out the troops.
Do you have a website? I would like to read up on this program as I have some questions. My main question is who is responsible for the fishing licenses?

We had a similar event last year doing some striper fishing on Lake Murray. The organizers had worked it out with DNR and a list was provided with the names of all the troops fishing and they were covered to fish for the day without a license. I believe we had about 15 boats and the goal for the next trip in June is 20.
It was probably one of my most memorable trips last year. Unlike myself, many of the hosting boats were guides who gave up a days pay to take them out. All of the live herring was donated by a couple of the local bait guys and lunch was provided by a couple who owns a local BBQ restaurant and just lost a nephew in Afganistan only months before the event…and they are doing the same this year.
If you have a boat and available to do it it, I would stongly suggest signing up and getting some of them out on the water!
Sorry no website… This is a much more low key event, than say the MAD events. If you have any questions feel free to email me coates2122@yahoo.com
Going to work with DNR, which wasn’t a problem last time we did this, to get some waivers.
Would like to shoot for 20 boats, and our Squadron is going to have a nice cook-out for all involved after the event.
Maybe get some prizes for biggest, ugliest, etc fish.
Was more or less seeing if people would be interested in this. Getting troops is not going to be an issues at all, i would probably have 400 people wanting to go with one email.
Thanks all who want to help out! I will post on a couple other sites to see if i can some more people to tenitively commit, before we try to set dates, locations, etc.
Thanks again!
A worthy cause and a good time. I got the honor of helping out on a boat doing this the first time Chris did it. It was a fun day even though the seas were rough. These men and woman like to blow off steam and didn’t care if it was pinfish or anything else.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

would be will to take two if it is later on in the spring.
might be riding more that catching fish but would give it
my best shot at putting afew in the boat.
Thanks for all the responses and emails.
I got a disturbing email yelling at me about taking peoples money. I am assuming there was some kind of scam of someone trying to take money as donations and just pocketing it.
This is not a scam, or am i asking for anyones money.
Heck, i am willing to help people with expenses!
Thanks again for all that are willing to help out with this! I just had a meeting with my Commander (Air Force), and are working on a way to get people tax write off forms for all your expenses…
Probably have a date picked pretty soon, than we can adjust it to work with peoples schedules. Write now i have gotten about 20 boats from above and emails, and about 5-10 more boats of people i work with.

no need for documentation for tax returns…nor reimbursements for expenses…glad to help if you need an inshore boat. I just can’t guarantee catching fish!
Let us know the date. I can take 'me inshore or offshore a bit. I might even break out the old Woodland BDU’s or Class A.
Thanks for putting this together.
