I usually fish with a fishing vest in lieu of a tackle box. I sometimes keep smaller boxes in the vest, but generally keep my jig heads in a bag that used to contain grubs OR in one of the smaller boxes. I was going through my stuff last night and found a bunch of “good” gig heads, but they were a little rusty. Do you guys run into this and what do you do to knock the rust off. Wire brush? I know some of the obvious answers:
- don’t put wet salty jig heads back in the box
- clean and dry with fresh water before putting the back in (not gonna happen)
What do you use to sharpen your hooks? I guess the tackle shop has something?
I also found out that if you put a jig head back into the Gulp Alive juice for any length of time, it will disintegrate it.
Narcosis
As far as rust I am taking and spraying a little vegetable oil on them when they are new. Once rusted, I would segregate them to a separate containment and use them up.
I do keep one pocket on my tackle bag for “used” tackle. When I get back I dump it all in the soap bucket for cleaning everything else.
To sharpen hooks there are tons of things out there. I would recommend finding a “cheap” grooved stone. Easy to just swipe a couple of times and putthe needle edge back on it. If you have to do more than that, well probably should just use a new hook.

I cut a pool noodle and slip it over my grab bar on the console. Just stick the hooks in there after using them, that way you’re not putting salty hooks back in your box. At the end of the day(or after a few weeks)I rinse and put them back in my box.

I have a specific rod and reel that i use for fishing jigs only. Most of the time i use a 1/4 oz so i just keep one tied on(rinse with rod&reel ) until i break it off. If by chance i use a different size, i keep them out of the box until i rinse and dry. Same with a cork & same with bottom rig. since the rig on the rod never changes, the hook is not taken off until it gets hung or broken off. With lures you just have to frequently change out the hooks and possibly split rings.
