hook swivel clips vs. direct tie

What is your opinion on tying a lure directly to your line vs. tying it to a hook swivel.

Certainly easier to rapidly switch lures/hooks, but does it at all reduce the attractiveness of the lure to the fish?

yes

Sluggo,

There are guys and gals on this site who’ve forgotten more about fishing this afternoon than I’ll ever know, but I’m 99.999% sure you’re better off without a swivel. It’s a matter of “less being more”. Hope this helps and I don’t sound too much like Yoda…

Found out the hard way, used a swivel and it turned into a flying lure instead of a top water lure, tie without the swivel

i would tie directly to the line. i will sometimes use a snap/swivel when tossing big lures offshore or trolling large lures as long as they run true

I often use a duo-lock snap with no swivel. If you get the black ones and match it to your line strength, they’re pretty light and next to invisible. Directly to line is probably still better, but the snap is pretty convenient for switching lures, allows the lure to move freely, and doesn’t seem to spook the fish that I can tell.

definitely don’t use the bulky snap-swivels.

Only lure I always use snap swivels on is a spoon. That reduces line twist from the spoon significantly. If I’m using a spoon and want to switch to another lure, I cut off the swivel and tie on the lure.

Don’t put hooks directly on a swivel. I’ve seen plenty of folks loose fish because the fish bites down on the swivel and pops it open. They reel in the rig with a snap popped open and bent wide. And yes I always tell them, “I told you so.” Those pre-made rigs you see with snap swivels on them are for attaching snelled hooks with leaders to.
