Hook/tackle questions

So I had quite a large red get loose at the boat today and what I thought was just bad luck and a spit jig head turned out to be a badly bent hook portion of the jig head(the down side of fishing alone and not having the net ready). I had the same thing happen in a friendly bass tournament and one of the guys told me I shouldn’t buy such crappy hooks and gave me some advice about better hooks.
I’m not a cheap skate, I just don’t know any better and buying jig heads in a bag at the gas station/bait store didn’t work out for me. I’ve bought them before at CA but have no idea if that choice of jig heads was any better. Any thoughts on what brand/s I should get when it comes to saltwater hooks and/or jig heads so I can avoid this mistake in the future?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I really wanted to weigh that bad boy before I let him go.

OWNER HOOKS
www.ownerhooks.com/ read up on ultra heads.strong hook not cheap.I only use owner.are you using braided line? If so, back off on the drag because braided line will straighten out hooks. It will not stretch especially short distances. Been there done that. Hope this helps.

I will check them out thanks for he tip. Interesting you should say that, I do use braid and I tightened the drag probably three times while fighting that fish. I don’t like to tire them out too much so I try to get them in as quick as possible. I’d get him close and he’d take off so I’d tighten the drag and bring him back.

I like Owner hooks too. Good advice on not cranking down the drag. Don’t crank it down too much unless its running around a corner or you need to keep it out of some oysters. Take your time reviving, and the fish will be fine. Ripping its jaw out is probably worse than tiring it out.

(**(), I got so focused on not tiring the fish out I didn't even think about that aspect.

MovingZen How do you like the Owner website? I put it on my favorites to look when I need to find the right hooks.

I don’t use anything but Owner hooks now. Definately worth em.

I looked at it real quick and then went back later to check it out again. At first I just looked at the ultra heads and recognized them from some of the pictures I’ve seen on this site. Later when I went back I scrolled down and looked at the other jig heads and I think I’ve used some of them before. I’m guessing I need to go out to Haddrels(sp?) to find them?
A little late, but after I posted this I saw redfishmatts( i think it was him) post about pouring his own jigheads… and then raddaddy’s reply about different types of jigheads he likes. I plan to get some of each and try them out over time.
7 bucks for four jigheads isn’t too bad, I probably should have known better when I paid like 5 bucks for 10. I tell you this, I would have easily paid 7 bucks for one jig head if I could have gotten what may have been a personal best redfish into my boat. It’s not like I haven’t paid $8 for a topwater lure. Gotta make mistakes to learn.

If your fishing for big (way overslot fish) on a big rod…then use owner ball jig heads. Like 5$ for a 4 pack I believe.
But for throwing normal plastics or even s livebait around s dock for reds trout flounder largemouth ext , o use the generic red lead heads at HPT their like .49c a piece… yes spendmoney to learn but don’t waste your money! Is never pay 7$ for jig heads that’s ridiculous!
My .02 cents

I use my index finger on the spool edge of spinning reels to increase drag and my thumb on baitcasters. $30 to $50K boat, $5 gas, and save a few cents on a jighead. Owner hooks are my preference, also Gamakatzu, which are at Walmart. Bob

Anything Nickle Plated. Owner, Eagle Claw Lazer, Gamagatzu. I don’t know the local tear drop jig heads up here yet, but I always make sure the hook is nickle plated.

Slayer makes a really nice jig head. Holds the soft plastics very well.

Slayer Inc jig heads are probably the best when it comes to the hook and strenght. Fishin Mission makes a really good ones as well. We sell both at Haddrells. I would lean more towards Slayer Inc jigheads personally. Check 'em out.
