Hooked two Big Ones at the Grillage

Two big anchors that is! Pulled one of the bottom in about 50 feet of water, not fun. Managed to free ourselves from the other one by running out to the deeper water. No fish bites at the Grillage but did manage several reds and the obligatory dozen or more BSBs at the South Jetty.

The current was really ripping yesterday as we started fishing at the peak of the current about 3 hours before low tide in the afternoon. Fished several spots on the inside of the North Jetty starting near dynamite hole and moving out to the bend. Nothing. We fished live and cut mullet on the bottom. I think there was just too much current. We moved to a spot close to the sand bar at the end of the South Jetty and found some fish. It seems as though the current moves more slowly along the South Jetty and it was an hour later. They were biting everything, cut mullet, half eaten mullet, shrimp, and live mullet. We didn’t have many shrimp but that was definitely the favored bait. My Dad likes to fish pre-made leaders and he didn’t catch anything on the one rod he brought. My “home-made” Carolina rigs got all the bites.

Last bit of excitement was a steering casualty on the way back in. Made the trip from the Grillage to Patriots Point with basically no steering. Luckily it was calm and quiet on the harbor and we had twin engines to permit some maneuvering! Always something to make a trip more interesting.
