Hookin a Menhaden

What’s the best way to hook them for bottom fishin or cork? Tried lips and above eyes but they give up the ghost in little time. I know they aren’t very hardy but just wondering if anyone has any tricks or advice.

Nostril to nostril works best in my opinion. In one nostril and out there other!

Never tried with hadens but I used to hook mudminnows and shrimp down close to the tail. They seemed to last longer that way.

I usually hook menhaden through the eye socket. Towards the front of the nose I run the hook carefully through the eye socket as to not poke out the eye. They seem to stay alive fairly well…

Hooked em through the lips the last couple trips and had plenty of success. Just don’t cast too hard otherwise they will come off the hook.
