Hooks for Sheepshead

Starting to target the convicts, hooked a few last weekend and got them close to the boat then spit hook. What can you guys share with me?!! I am thinking I’m not using the right hooks as I was able to hook up a few times.

Also, I heard you have to use a circle hook now, DNR can fine you for using regular j-hooks? Any truth to that?

Can’t wait to get back home and get out there.

sheeps are not in the snapper/grouper series any longer so circle hooks are NOT required…I like Owner Aki 1/0 or 2/0 hooks, but most recent success was with the 2/0 Mutu circles…

Circle hooks ARE required. Regulations were effective in 2011.

Sheepshead were taken out of the snapper-grouper complex over a year ago so now circle hooks are not required for sheeps.
I use owner mosquito size 1 and 2/0 depending on what size fish I am catching.

I use mutu 1/0 for sheep fishing.
As far as spitting hooks is concerned, that might not entirely be a hook problem. When I started sheepshead fishing I had a lot of fish spit the hook. Since then I have less and less fish come unglued using the same type of hook. I think my problem was that I wasn’t setting the hook hard enough because I wasn’t feeling the strikes, I just saw my line moving and tried to reel it in. Sheepies have tough little mouths, and sometimes you have to jerk the crap out of a hook set to get it buried deep.

Use a Gamakatsu 1/0 menhaden nose hook that you would use for King Mackeral fishing. Rig an egg sinker and about an 18" leader and tie to the hook. The hooks are very strong and very sharp. Hooks them in the lip.

Thanks for all the info. I currently find myself in Great Lakes Ill for work. This work thing needs to stop as it is getting in the way of my ME Time on the water!! I know I have a “problem” as I went to the local Bass Pro shop here (sorry guys at Haddrell’s West Ashley!!) this Sunday and bought a package of all the hooks on this thread.

I will be back next weekend and will try them all out!

What CS Doug said. A large Sheepshead can bend out mosquito hooks with ease; they are flimsy, wire hooks IMO. Want to help even the score, go with J-hooks and offset - -the odds are already in a sheephead’s favor. You can always release anything over the 2 you’ll need for supper.

They aren’t spitting the hook. They are more than likely hooked in the lip and it rips out, back off the drag when you get them out of the structure and net them quickly. I like my rod to have a lot more give in the tip to prevent ripping the hook out of lip hooked fish. Gamakatsu live bait hooks 1/0 or 2/0 (pretty much the same hook as CSDoug)or owner cutting points and check the point of your hook every few fish! They will destroy hook points.

I use just a regular j hook and bout 8 inches of leader and catch fish like this all day long

Mustad ultra point live bait #94140 in 1 or 1/0. Go for at the least the 2x but 3x is better. Owner Mosquitos are a good second but I have snapped and bent enough that I don’t mess with them if I’m in a area I know larger fish reside. Pretty much alway rhino hunting these days with nearly locked drags

anybody caught any lately we went last weekend in beaufort noteven a bait steal
