Im tired of opening my box and seeing my hooks or split rings or jigs rusted up. I keep all my stuff in those clear tackle trays. Any help would be much appreciated. Does this mean I am putting up tackle when its still wet? Maybe a light misting of wd-40? Do i need to leave the trays slightly open when I put stuff up?
“If you had to tell someone how good you are, then you probably aren’t that good”
I’ve used the plastic boxes for ever. Keep everything in the original package until you use one (hook or swivel, etc). Then, never put it back in the box. Leave it on the rod and rinse. Anything that has come in contact with the salt should not be put back in the box even if rinsed. If any metal touches metal once it’s out of the package it will probably rust.
Vapor Lock or volatile-corrosion inhibition (VCI) chips are a cardboard or plastic material infused with an anti-corrosion compound. You can cut them to size. Put it in your tackle box and it creates a rustproof environment. I do not think WD-40 prevents rust.
Main ingredient in WD-40… FISH OIL!! Used to know some old time fishermen who swore by spraying thier lures with WD-40 before putting them out, never was much for it, but they did catch fish! Personally I like my rigs clean, not oily tho!
Had a $100 unopened box of hooks on the boat from last year and ended up throwing away 90% of them this year due to rust on them.
Imagine what a rust free world would be like!!

No… really. It’s true. If someone writes it on the internet it is absolutely true and you are now clear to just keep repeating it without doing any independent checking. I’ll show you my South America scar.
There is NO information that there is fish oil in WD40. And it is highly unlikely that you will have your kidney removed in Argentina. Probably the same chance as staying in America BUT, I admit that I don’t have the specific numbers for this and will not claim to… on the internet.
I would question posts from guys like this. But, that’s just me.
Oh, and Top2Bottom. I have a fresh can of WD40. I will be happy to spray it in your mouth. After all… it has fish oil in it, right? Fish can eat it? People can eat it?
Spanish,
I am no expert by any means, but I would put one in each of the smaller compartments or every other compartment. They are supposed to penetrate into small areas, but one may not provide adequate protection.
Put several Q-tips in each compartment. This will soak up all the extra moisture in the box. You still must rinse the tackle off if it goes in the salt, but it does a great job of keeping moisture down the the tackle box.
i put open packs of hooks, swivels, etc in small ziplocks and put a little rice in there with them as well as put some loose rice in the trays. the rice will suck up every little bit of wetness.
My system is throw anything used in a bucket while on the boat- jigs, plugs, hooks, swivels, etc… Throw them in a bucket of freshwater when I get to it(it usually takes me a day or 2 to clean up from a trip). Take them out of the bucket a day or 2 later and lay on a rag in the garage. Put them back in the box when they are dry. Use the same terminal tackle until you lose it or it looks to beat up and start over.
Seriously, most of my stuff that I find rusted is hooks in bulk boxes that I bought a bunch of. I have found that a piece of cabinet liner cut to fit those plastic tackle drawers keeps things in place and fairly air tight. Cut it the same size as the lid and it will stay jammed in pretty good. Those little swivels won’t jump to the bin next door either.
