Horse mullet

I’ve often seen small schools of 3-8 of horse mullet but they are often hard to catch, any one know if you can bait then or catch them a better way than chasing them with a cast net?

We call them gold ear mullet. They will eat bread but I dont think it is worth the hook and line strategy. Smaller net with faster throw and better accuracy.

I use a 10 ft 5/8 net with lots of lead to catch the big ones. Spreads wide and sinks faster than they can swim out from under it. Just spread the 20 foot diameter wide and they can’t escape. When it gets cool and they school up, you can catch so much horse mullet in one throw you can’t even pull the net in.

They were schooling good in the Lower Stono (between Sol Legare and the mouth of Kiawah River) three weeks ago. Schools of 20-30 ft across. Threw twice on them with my 4 ft bait net and filled a cooler for crab pot bait.

all were about a foot in length.
