Hospital

My chest was hurting me yesterday. Finally gave into the wife about 10:00 last night. Went to the hospital. Went in and told them my chest was hurting. Have a seat. About 10 minutes later they come get me to do a EKG. Go back and sit in the waiting room. After a little while they come back and get me to do blood work. Go back to the waiting room. About an hour later they come get me to do a chest x-ray. About midnight a lady goes up to the desk says I’ve been sitting here since noon when are you going to get me in the room. She looked miserable. covid.
About 02 they finally come get her. People in their sleeping on the floor. Around 03 they take me back to the emergency room. Put me in a bed in the hallway.
They do blood work again and a CT scan. Give me a handful aspirin tell me they don’t have a room for me. Tell me I have an appointment at 06:45 tomorrow for a stress test. The bed they put me in was at the end of the nursing station. The room right across the hallway fellow died. Around 05. Pulled sheet over his head. At 06:30 when I left he was still in the room.
More like a hospital in a third world country. Prisma Greenville hospital.

good of you to go to the hospital. Many get pig headed and won’t go. Hate you had such a bad time at E.R. If it was a heart attack they should have been able to see elevated Troponin levels in your blood. That is what signaled mine. By all means get the stress test done, don’t play around with this.

If you don’t mind me asking, did you call the missions act before going for approval? I’ve always been curious since I dropped Blue Cross and have nothing but VA health care. I’ve only called them once to get some stitches from a local urgent care center.

Keep us posted. Hope you get to feeling better. Acid reflux can cause some serious chest pain… as well as stress and anxiety. No more road rage for you!

It surprised me the way they dragged their feet when I went in. Had a guy at work have a heart attack. Took him to the Grand strand hospital two blocks away. When we went in and I told him he was having chest pains they immediately took him to the back. Gave him baby aspirin and nitro. Had him hooked up to EKG within minutes. He ended up having a triple bypass.
Several years ago I broke a couple ribs and collar bone. Bruised lung and kidneys spent two days in the hospital. VA picked up everything Blue Cross and Blue shield did not pay.

My granddaddy my dad and all my uncles but one died between 55 and 65 of heart disease. My granddaddy had a heart attack went to the hospital when he was checking out had another heart attack and died right there in the hospital. That was early '70s though.
But they were all real big men all of them around 6’6"300 lb and not fat
Me I’m just a little sawed off squirt.

Hope all is well, OTC.

They should have taken you back immediately. They sound like a really bad ER. Thanks to all these places pushing vaccines a lot of medical staff are leaving but that’s no excuse. Glad you doing a little better & definitely follow up.

I won’t defend the hospital but, my son is an ER nurse and he has been working crazy hours due to staff shortages. No way to make things go faster when you are short-handed AND the folks working are worn out. He is working extra shifts every week and even at his age, he is getting worn a bit thin.

"Apathy is the Glove into Which Evil Slips It's Hand", but really, who cares?

That sounds terrible man, so sorry to hear about this. Go get that test.

My dad had two open heart surgeries. It wasn’t his heart that finally got him, but lung cancer. 40 years of smoking. Best thing he ever did for me was whip my tail when he caught me sneaking smokes from him when I was young.

Go get that test.

So the test should have been this morning… How did it go?

Saying an extra prayer for ya OTC. Hope it’s just the reflux or something simple

…well, some fishing too!

I appreciate it y’all.

My ass is getting out of shape had me huffing and puffing. It took forever to get my heart rate up to the Target of one 139.
Doctor said all the EKG stuff from the treadmill looked okay. Someone has to read the CAT scan or whatever they do before and after the treadmill.
Again I really appreciate y’all’s thoughts.
Got a few things at work to finish up this afternoon. And get the hell out of Greenville and back to the beach. They’re saying there’s a good possibility of snow in the Greenville area want no part of that.

No troponin issues and you didn’t die on the treadmill. Good signs.

Had to take my Dad to Roper ER downtown Charleston, couple of months ago. Very mild heart attack symptoms. He’s mid-80s. They took him back, did blood work, and fed him aspirin within minutes. Troponin levels changed over a few hours showing some sort of heart issue. Glad he decided to get checked out. And, he’s all good now.

Service was very good. BUT, the ER was absolutely stretched to its limits. The entire time he was in the ER (most of 24 hrs. until he got a room) we sat and listened to the ER coordinator guy answering the phone and balancing where ambulances could/should deliver patients. Had staff out with wuflu and such.

I feel for you military/retired guys. You deserve the best. Somehow, we manage to provide you some pretty crappy support. Shouldn’t be that way. VA is supposed to help. Not make it worse.

Not bringing my political preferences to this thread, but the four years Trump was in office the VA made a complete 180. Things were better than ever, but over this administration and covid fiasco things seem to be slipping back the way they were. Let’s just hope it’s due to all the strain from covid.

Same with me on the treadmill, took about 12 min to get my pulse rate up. Doc and nurse were impressed. So far only time I get some chest pain after the heartattack is when I get really mad at something I shouldn’t. My whole mind set of recent is not to let much of anything bother me. I’m trying not to watch any news like I used to.

The nurse called me last night and told me everything looked good. .
I had a stress test at 50 and 55. My second 1 my doctor wrote the order to get the shot not to be on the treadmill. Loose screw in my hip…
That was a very intense unpleasant 5-minute experience.
This trip they asked me can I walk on the treadmill or do I need the shoot.
Oh no I can walk the treadmill. They told me okay if we can’t get your heart rate up we will have to give you the shot.
The nurse and the two doctors were laughing… I asked him what’s so funny.
My heart rate went from 65 to 71 just talking about that shot.
After all of us laughing and joking about it. Doc said perfect example what stress can do to you.
And from the previous CAT scan they see I have a torn muscle on my sternum. That is where I’m getting the pain from.
I have been busted up pretty bad several times in my life. I was not too awful concerned over this. I just kind of felt that there was nothing bad wrong.
But it really made me think about my mortality. Not guaranteed tomorrow y’all.

Yep, and you know Today is Yesterday’s Tomorrow.

Glad to hear it wasn’t your ticker. With the family history keep an eye on it. I’m a firm believer in bad genetics causing most Heart Dieses. Also Lipid particle size. A few years ago I got in on a study that measured not just Cholesterol levels but the size as well. It is believed that people with high Cholesterol numbers and no heart dieses have a larger particle size and they don’t adhere to artery walls as bad as smaller particles… or something like that.

I’ve also been doing some research on long term statin use and links to Alzheimer’s . Now that they have been used for several years some studies are linking them to brain issues. Our Brains need Cholesterol for fuel to function proper. Low cholesterol cab bring brain activity… mood regulation, learning, and memory, to a halt. I take two different statins and my biggest issues have been leg cramps… rosuvastation and ezetimibe

Fred, you are correct on the lipid stuff. It’s not the LDL specifically, size matters with that. My doc has sent my blood to somewhere in Boston for that breakdown.

Small stuff sticks more than large and builds up.

NN

I agree with most everything Fred says He thinks it through and never talks down to anyone.

I first presented with heart disease in my early 30”s. My father passed at 54 from his 3 rd bypass attempt. He smoked 3 packs of Camels a day . I grew up in Winston Salem NC and as many know that was cigarette city. In my high school RJ Reynolds tobacco company held an assembly in our school to help us to choose whether to smoke or not, and how to do so responsibly. After my first coronary event , my dr suggested that I try to cut back on smoking. I agreed and fired up my next first smoke in the hospital parking lot on my way home. I didn’t cut back enough to matter and I was back in the hospital 3 times for blockages and a bypass at 48 years old. My dr The same dr told me that I would be dead in a year if I didn’t quit. That time I did. It was difficult but do-able. Since quitting I have not had a single event and I’m 71 now. So is it heredity or mistreatment of our bodies?? My grandfather worked for RJ Reynolds tobacco company Worked on the Winston production line , never smoked and lived to 94!
All of my fathers brothers and sisters that smoked didn’t live past 60. My VA dr took me off statins years ago because my cholesterol levels were abnormally low. My lungs recovered but I still have 11 stents in my coronarys

Maybe 2 years ago or so my cholesterol levels were getting kind of high. Doc wanted to put me on medicine. I can do this with my diet?? We eat fairly good/healthy. No turkey bacon real bacon. Haha junk food is my problem.
But anyway I’ve been able to keep my cholesterol down enough not to take medicine. My last blood work doc said it’s getting a little high again. March I do my yearly blood work and check up.
Fortunately I’ve been a pretty healthy person.
But I have realized getting old is not for pansies.

Thanks for the kind words natureboy. But unfortunately, I’ve talked down to several people through my life, just try to not do it anymore. Even when it’s probably acceptable, even warranted. Some bridges burned were worth it, others? As for thinking things through, I would like to think I’m a little better at it. I’ve had several on here call me out on a knee jerk statement… rightfully so. Life goes on. Ne

While I agree that genetics play an important role, I believe that if we have good genetics that we still have the opportunity to screw it up by abusing our bodies and I assure you that I regret ever having that first smoke. I guess that was the native Americans revenge for the diseases Columbus and the Europeans brought.

The statin drugs may do some good but they caused me issues like joint pain and alertness along with the possibility of liver damage. I have gotten to the point that I question every drug the medical establishment pushes

That is exactly how the V A hospital was under Obama. Men were dying waiting on care. Of simple things that could have been easily treated. In Charleston a man died of simple bronchitis. Men that needed by pass were given nitro and sent to wait for the heart attack. Trump fixed this but Biden is ruining it. I can’t imagine any human with a heart and decent character supporting the worst president ever.
