Don’t underestimate how tuff a red fish is, I’ve let loose a gut hooked floater that came to life and caught him like 15 minutes later and I have also caught the same fish over and over in like a 30 minute time frame to the point that I left that spot and he was flat out stuffed full of food with like 4 fresh hook marks still feeding like crazy. Both were 15 inchers, I always try to hold the tale and the chest below the pec fins but when they get really big you have to put some body into it to support them or do the cradle technique which both put more contact on the fish, but I try to wet me or what I am holding it with, a 5 gallon bucket of water can do more than just rinse hands.

Why do you have to take fish that large out of the water at all to release it? Leave it in the water, beside the boat, or dock and remove the hook. It’s already stressed, don’t make it worse. Just because it swims away doesn’t mean it won’t die 24 hours later, or the blood from it’s gills attracts a shark and it’s over.
Pier fishing is entirely different, but yes if I did that I would have a plastic wheelbarrow half full of water to put the fish in and wheel it to the beach to release it. I don’t pier fish anyway.

It’s also a sportsman board. If you don’t have some respect for the wildlife, please don’t post pictures of it.

quote:What, they don't like the truth? Bull reds are a breeding resource. How you treat them makes a difference in a sustainable fishery. Every yahoo out there taking a "selfie" has consequences: http://anglingunlimited.com/fishing/catch-release-properly/ Oh...that's not bullreds...Fish are fish...tough enough without some dweeb hauling them out of the water to prove they caught a fish...after being stressed fighting to be free. Larry meant no harm in informing you of the consequences of your photo op and yet you choose to make lite of it. Fish, especially breeding stock(the reason they're slot reds), are under pressure. If you’re going to post pictures and reports of abusing our resources, don’t let the door hit you in the azz when you leave.

Don’t underestimate how fragile they are either. I’ve been catching reds for 60 years, and as a professional guide for 30 years, so I’ve caught a dozen thousand, probably 100,000 or more in 60 years. I’d like my grandchildren to be able to catch some too.

Dockman, you give the guys heck on fingers in gills but ask about the gloves?
What gives? Didn’t you know that wearing gloves helps protect the fish and their vital slime? also keeps that fishy smell off you hands if your one that doesn’t like it. Never bothered me, but Sometimes I still wear gloves.
Nice fish smabell!

There it is! That’s my reasoning as well. Unfortunately we have many guides and fishermen that like to specifically target large reds that you can’t even eat! For the sole purpose of taking a picture with them! Lot’s of those pictures show the client actually bear hugging the fish! I can honestly say I’ve never purposely targeted an over the slot red and the many that I’ve caught always aggravated me because I couldn’t keep them to eat.
The reds that smabell pictured don’t look like what I consider a “bull” spot tail. 24-26" ?

I’ve fished salt water all my life ( 70 years) and the red (bass) fishing is better today than years ago due to people like Larry and others that take care of the resorce! A lot of ya’ll need to go to fresh water and fish carp and gar!
