The forecast for light winds and calm seas was just too good not to go offshore and try to catch a wahoo on Friday. We put in at Wappoo Landing and did 29 knots all of the way to the ledge, without ever taking a drop of spray.
We started at the outcrop and did high-speed trolling for an hour or so, but no luck. We switched over to regular trolling and got a few strikes as we worked the Southwest Banks. We caught our first wahoo on a Yo-Zuri purple bonita, fished in the propwash of the boat. The fish weighed about 40 pounds. We lost a few more fish to cutoffs and landed another wahoo on the way back line, a black and green Ilander Black Hole with a large ballyhoo. This fish weighed about 35 pounds. The bonitos were chasing bait all over the surface on the ledge. We saw them come up again in the afternoon in about 300 feet of water. If I go again next week, I might try hanging around the bonitos in the deep to see what else is out there.
We rolled back in at 30 knots, without a drop of spray. Great day on the water.
Good Report. Thanks for sharing

What depth are you trolling the Yo-Zuri purple bonita? We drag a similar rig almost every time we troll and have yet to land a Wahoo on it. Thanks

I pull the Zo-Zuri as close as I can behind the boat. Usually about 20-30 feet back. I don’t use a weight when pulling the plug less than 8 knots. It usually gets hit at least once or twice every trip.

Hmmmm Thanks. The one we pull is weighted and it dives on it’s own. I’m wondering if we’re too deep or not far enough behind the prop-wash.

We slay on the Bonitas also. Great lure.
