Hot Shot report for Tuesday June 3

We had a great trip yesterday on the Hot Shot. The ocean was calm and the fish were biting. We started out on the ledge at the 350 line and caught a few dolphins before heading out to the deeper water. As we got into 300 feet of water, we put out the lures and pulled them at 8.5 to 9 knots. We caught some very nice dolphins, two in the 50 lb. range, one in the 40’s, and the rest over 25. I guess when you pull big lures you catch big fish.

We found a temperature break that went from 78 to 81 degrees and nice blue water. Not long after we crossed over into the blue water, two blue marlin came into the spread and caused havoc. We hooked both, only to have one throw the hook after a minute or so. While the other one was making its first run, we began to clear lines. As we were clearing lines a nice bull dolphin ate a lure. We were able to get the dolphin into the boat while backing down on the marlin. My daughter, Callie, was the angler on the marlin and did a great job. After a 35 minute fight, the 200 lb. blue was brought along side the boat and released.

The weedlines were begining to form up yesterday and the warm water was being pushed inshore on the SE wind. It should be good fishing this week.

We ended up with 12 nice big dolpins and the blue marlin for the day.

What type of hook set up to you use with your lures: single hook, 180 degree off set, 90 degree.

i ask because i have been experimenting with mine.

also what head shape and position in the spread did the fish hit?

Thanks in advance

Im sure your a proud papa, and she will never forget that fish. I have never forgot catching my first with my dad.

Nice dolphin! Thanks for the report.

Freshwater is for drinking.

Nice work Dick.

Planning first trip of the year this Sunday. The Awlgrip finally dried.

I assume the lines will be pushing north.

Any word on the current?

nice report…

Muledriver, we use a single hook behind all of the lures. The lures have a rubber stopper glued to the inside of each lure. The leader goes through the lure and is attached to a swivel on the inside of the lure. We use a Spro aussie swivel with enough wire cable to put the eye of the hook within the skirt of the lure, making it IFGA legal. It is kind of hard to explain, but once you see it, it makes sense. Stop by the boat sometime and I’d be happy to show them to you. We are at Ripley Light Yacht Club, in front of the Springhill Suites.

Congrats on the great day! I heard about his trip from my friend Nick, who I believe was on the boat this day. I wish I had the oppurtunity to make it on the boat!!!

I think I get the gest of it. I understand keeping the eye of the hook in skirt for IGFA.

Leader trough skirt through stopper crimped to aussie swivel cable to length crimped to hook. Gotcha Thanks.

I want to switch up something for safety reasons and trying to get a better hook-up ratio.

Whats your hot lure been this year so far. I have a Joe Yee Super Plunger with a pearl head that looks like it has been rubbed with sandpaper. My personal favorite is a Poluki(sp) cupped head at 8.5kts it seems to pull a bubble trail for 20 yards.

I would stop by but Im an hour and a half away, I appreciate the offer.
