hours on a motor??

ok, so im sure that has been discussed at great length over and over again. much like, “how many miles out can you go in a 20 ft boat”. With that being said, how many hours can you put on a yamaha 225 4stroke? is a 1,0000 hours like 100,000 miles on a honda? of course maintance, upkeep, flushings, all play a part.

or maybe i should put it this way. if there is 2 23ft boats exactly the same and one them has say 250 hours and the other boat has 1,000 hours, how much cheaper would the 1,000 hour boat have to be for you to consider purchasing it.

this isnt just for discussions sake. im looking at a boat that has 1000 hours on the motor. what would be you guys questions to the owner or what would you do before purchasing the boat?

hours on cars and trucks work out to an AVERAGE of 30 mph…1000 hrs would be 30k miles…outboard motor I would guess is double or alittle more due to higher rpm operating
1000 hours IMO is nothing …I have 1700 hours on my lawn tractor and it’s 32 yrs old

Everyone seems to agree 4strokes should get 3-4k hours before BOOm BANG, SLAM.
Had over 2k hours on my old Merc 2 strokes, and were going strong when i sold them.

Compression and corrossion would be my indicators.
If it has strong and even compression, it should have many
more years left on it. That is the predominate wear indicator.

So I guess an outboard shrimp trawl or a sail fleet chase boat that spent last summer towing in camp sailers 10 at the time, would use the 30mph comparison?

specifically what 2 motors are you talking about

both have yamaha 225 4strokes

Considering I’ve just sold a boat with close to 1000, w/ warranty for 2 more years, there was no discount for hours on the motor. I considered the shape of the vessel that had the 1000 hours and priced it around wholesale for a great deal. I consider a 3 yo boat with 1000 hours to be a 3 yo car with 90-100k miles. The difference is the warranty.

thats a good point jay…i did think about a motors warranty is based on years only right? not like a car. year or miles, whichever comes fist…

1000 hours on a 4 stroke yamaha wouldnt be worth the same as a a motor with 250 hours, but it wouldnt make the motor worthless either
