How are the Jetties/Local Reefs this time of year?

Just got myself a new boat and want to get out to the jetties and some of the local reefs. What type of fishing should I be doing and what type of species should I expect to find this time of year? Any advice would be helpful as I haven’t been off our coast before.

Better learn the boat and it’s limitations before going offshore. The jetties can be good for a variety of species during the fall. The nearshore reef can hold some big reds, sheeps, weakfish, black drum, lots of small black sea bass.

I totally agree and have no intention of putting myself or anyone else at danger without knowing what she can do.

That being said, are you trolling or fishing bottom…? When are the wahoo and cobia running? don’t really know the seasons as I’ve only have been surf fishing and kayak fishing the last 5yrs.

And don’t forget the “mother-in-law” (toad fish) that seems to be a biting extremely well these last couple of weeks.

I troll and bottom fish. Cobia is more spring and summer fishing. Dolphin is mostly mid March to mid June with more scattered fish on into the fall. Wahoo are pretty much year round if you can get on the right location but seem better January through March. Bottom fishing is pretty good year round with some of the best fishing during the winter months.

Thanks. Hope to get out there soon! This weekend’s weather may keep me inland, fingers crossed for the best.

Can’t keep cobia right now anyway. I actually caught one bottom fishing this past week.

I caught a 50-60 pounder the 1st of October. Hated having to let him go, but he was fun.

How do you release the cobia? I know they are brutes when you don’t wear them out and gaff them(while in season).

They are brutes even if you do wear them out! If you can’t remove the hook, just cut the line as short as possible.

I was at the 60 this weekend. There were a lot of big jacks, a couple smaller spade fish, and a bunch of really big sheep head.
The water clarity offshore is very poor right now, so the bite isn’t very good at the reef.

are you dropping fiddlers down for the sheeps or are they eating squid, clams, etc… out there? I have been having issues catching sheeps lately. I really have never been good at it, but have started to target them more.

An offer they can’t refuse!

That’s just cheatin.

The secret to catching sheeps is to set the hook just before they bite:smiley:
