How do you fish/hook your mullet/cut mullet?

Reading the thread below got me thinking to ask this question. What is the best way to fish cut mullet. Do you cut it in chunks, strips/filets, etc. And how do you hook it, if chunks, through the side with the hook out, etc. I have tried fising mullet chunks with little success. Seems its hard to get to stay on the hook and often the crabs get to it before long. When fishing live mullet, through the lips is best?

big ones i filet and then cut into about 1.5 in x 1.5 in chunks. through the meat and out the skin side. Out the skin side so the hook barb doesnt come back thru. Fingers i like to be alive and use whole.

What Jimmy said?.cut mullet into chunks then run hook up through the meat and out the back of the skin. THe spine helps keep the meat on the hook.
I try hooking live mullet through the upper lip, but if you’re a little too “whippy” on the cast the hook pulls out!

I usually just cut them into chunks and hook it through the meatiest part of the chunk. Then its just a battle with the crabs but I have caught 18’ flounder and upper slot reds when the crabs aren’t devouring everything. I prefer shrimp though.

Live-I hook the small ones through the mouth and the big ones below the top fin above the back bone. If cutting the style of chunk depends on the size of fish I am after, but the white belly meat cut into a fish shaped triangle seems to work pretty well.

18’ flounder???

Must have taken a while to filet that monster.

Ok, so I should start fileting the large whole mullet and then cut the filet into chunks with the hook into the meat side and out the skin side. Thanks

I dont use mullet that are more than 12"
6"-12" I have the best luck with the heads hooked through the eyes.
The 2nd piece I cut the tail fin off and hook it through the remaining tail section. It should hang upside down. Then give a slit in the guts at a 45 degree angle.
3"-6" whole hooked behind the dorsal fin.
3" and below hooked through upper lip.

It ain’t rocket science…Hook it and hold on.

Fight the crabs. It can be worth it.

the white belly meat cut into a “fish shaped triangle”.

What kind of fish you been catching??

chunk it and hook in one side through fattest part then back in to bury point

What jimmy said. Even if it doesn’t look like much of the hook is into the meat… the skin is tough and not coming out. As for fingers, I tent to cut of the heads and hook the rest of the body. Meanwhile, I hold onto the heads (times in the fall where for some odd reason the freak’n little mullet heads are noticeably hit more often/quicker than the body… don’t ask me why… I have no idea… I used throw the heads away).

Have had the same experience with mullet heads. Most times no luck.
Some times they love it, particularly if the head is large enough to split in half or quarter.
