Attempted to clean the internal filter on my 70 hp 2-stroke Yamaha this past weekend but could not get the cup to unscrew from the filter head. I did not want to force it and run the risk of breaking it. Is there a trick to getting the cup apart from the filter head? Also, how exactly do you clean the filter itself once it is out?
Mine was really stuck a few weeks ago. I just used some channel locks and a rag, and turned very very careful. I’m going to remove and service it more frequently now so that it doesn’t happen again.
Talked with Yammaha a while back on this topic. Told me just what Chris said, ethanol is swelling the plastic bowl and to try freezer to take it off, then put it back in freezer to put it back on. that works fine if your at house, but if one is out on water and needs to empty water out of it or clean it, it’s a bit@h to get off and back on and the plastic threads will end up getting messed up over time. I ended up getting using a strap wrench on it to remove it and then had to tighten it back up with strap wrench otherwise it would leak. I griped enough to them and they sent a new bowl out under warranty. If I remember right, a new bowl is over 100$?
What a price difference!!! One I was workin on was a 250hp. I forsee a lot more probs. with these filters. No way I could have tightened it enough to prevent it from leaking fuel without a strap wrench or channel locks on board. Gotta love that ethanol cr@p!
