Not so my friend. We just caught a 50+ lb. Whoo in 170 feet of water. WELL short of the Gulf Stream. They hang out on the ledge area out there. And as I’ve recently learned from all the good people on this site, that is a year round fishery.

I’ve seen wahoo in 105’ of water and wouldn’t doubt if they came in closer than that.

If my memory serves me right Ladyshrimpkiller posted last summer where she caught a nice Wahoo near the last can in the shipping channel. Must have been lost or something.

A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.

Thats good to know. Heres the next question i have 200 bucks in basspro gift cards i need to use. What trolling rigs should i buy? I have a bunch of live bait rigs so i am good there. I have a pretty good idea but i want your idea.

Find some instructions, or someone who will teach you to create a leader with a skirt on it, rigged for ballyhoo. Being able to make them is SO MUCH better than buying each rig you need. This way, if you loose some, you can whip one up real quick in the boat if needs be. And, they don’t take that long to construct. You’ll need good wire, the ability to tie a haywire twist, some way of fastening the ballyhoo (I use a post and spring set up. Some will tell you not to use this, . . . . . users choice), and some wire crimps/cutters.

As far as skirts, and how to dress up your rigs, again they are as varied as the people on this site. You can have as much luck running a $5 skirt as you can a $50 skirt. The fish don’t know how much you paid for them. I’d start with the C&H line. They’ve worked for me and won’t break the bank.

  1. Youtube is your friend! Lot of good information on rigs and trolling speeds and what to look for.

  2. Use the search function in offshore forums for help on this site, use keywords

  3. Talk with the tackle stores-Atlantic Game and Tackle in Mt. pleasant and Charleston Angler are really helpful always and will help you out!

Lastly: Good Luck, be safe, take pictures, and post a report!

I am not in town but once in a blue moon to fish so its hard to stop by one of those tackle shops since i live in charlotte, nc. The gift cards are xmas gifts. I was there last weekend but most rode around in the harbor and explored a little bit.
I got fat and happy at the oyster festival on sunday and was worthless the rest of the day.

You’re good in your boat. I had a 20’ Trophy with old Mariner on it that got me there and back safely often. Went out about 40 miles max before selling it. Now on the 4.5 mpg, don’t expect that if seas kick up so don’t ever plan a 100 mile trip day and think you’re good on 25-30 gallons. Always top off!

You can get wahoo in 100 ft of water. I limited out two times in 2011 without ever hitting the ledge, much less the stream…

No worries, i dont know many people in charleston because i live in charlotte, nc and am new to the site. I take any insight into fishing as a way to grow my knowledge base. I grew up fishing in fl where i am from. Flats fishing in and around boca grand is where most of my saltwater knowledge is from. Fished a lot offshore in nc with family friend when i was a kid. I want to gain as my knowledge from this site before hitting in hard this spring and summer.

i am limited by boat size and very cautious of the weather. Pick your days and do a match-up at this site, the buddy system works, your life will depend on it. I do go to the ledge i like to be at Y-73 it’s closer.
