You always hear people saying to get off the road to find the deer. In my 30 minute walk into the woods the other morning, I couldn’t help but think how far some other people go in. Just curious to know is how far y’all go in. I tend to go in anywhere from 1/4 mile to a mile.
All depends on where your hunting. I’ve killed more than a few in sight of a highway. In the govt woods I’ve gone further than I would want to drag one out more than once.

Drive down any Interstate Hyw at 2/3AM and you will see all the deer you want! I can’t help but think, these deer don’t go more than 1/2 hundred yards off it, to bed down during the day!

I have sat in site of the road and killed. Most of the people that hunt a good distance from it like to make sure they are alone. I have seen nice bucks lay down right at the edge of a road.
It takes me 30 minute to walk 200 yards some days on club stands.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

My closest stand is 25 yards from a secondary road. I have had one buck spooked as a friend rode by saw my truck and layed on the horn. That is the only time I’ve had one spooked from a vehicle. My furthest is about 300 yards and the only time I’ve had them spooked was from neighboring dog club and nephew on the four wheeler. Deer get used to surrounding familiar noise.

I hunt Francis Marion quite a bit. I have shot deer and hogs a couple hundred yards from my truck and I have killed them so far I was kicking myself from being so far from the truck.
I hunted Wyoming a couple of weeks ago and my shortest walk in was 3 miles on some not-so-flat terrain. Last day I packed out a ~300lb mule deer 5 miles. I got most of my hard hunting done already… I think I will sit a hop, skip and a jump from the truck the rest of the season.
in fm 1 place i sit is about 100 yards from the gravel road and ive seen absolutely nothing all year and only a small 5 point at night on the camera…however the place i shot my 7 last year is about 600 yards off the road. yes ive always been alone and saw plenty of deer last year but as others said yup got my exercise dragging! today is saturday for me, i can see about 150 yards with plenty of oak trees in sight, and gun season opens today in hellhole so time for a workout i hope
I walk anywhere from 1/4 mile to 1 1/2 miles from the truck to where I will hunt. many times I will slip up on deer while walking in. I enjoy looking for sign everywhere that I go, and wouldn’t see half of it from the truck or 4 wheeler. Plus, I need the exercise!
