Shook down the intrepid today. Left ICW through dewees inlet to about 5 miles off shore. Rode about 23 mph to Charlton harbor inlet and back to the ICW. Boat was perfect. Stiff northeast wind off my stern. How high were the seas today.? What is a good website for checking sea conditions?
These are a good start:

yikes, if this question doesnt make people nervous about whose out on the water then i dont know what would!
Longenuff has got the links right.
Well, the reason I asked, is I had checked out the NOAA site, and at 11:00am it said the average wave height was 2 to 3 meters. When I went out, I would say around 12:30, the wave height, period, and power seemed MUCH higher than what was posted. I looked back at the wave chart on NOAA for that afternoon, and noticed that the seas did increase significantly in energy but not so much in height from the earlier recording. I figured the seemingly increased seas from the NOAA chart were a combination of a powerful cell having just blown through, and the fact that I was close to shore. I noticed that the water conditions websites vary somewhat. It just seemed to me on that afternoon in that location the NOAA website underestimated what I observed. Regardless, the Intrepid was easily up to the task.
I appreciate the links! I had been informed that sailflow is a good resource. The NOAA charts are my preference, but the other I will get the app for my phone. From what I hear, NOAA and Saillfow are the mainstays. From my first offshore experience, these are clearly guides only, and current conditions can vary significantly. I was very impressed with what a northeast wind will do to this ocean…what a beautiful, powerful, and awe-inspiring sight!

3 meters is 10’. That’s a pretty big sea to fish, even for a seaman

I didn’t fish. Strictly a shakedown. Boat was flawless. The only problems I encountered was (1) Noise, I was near impossible to hear my radio under power, and (2) Spray. I like to wear polarized sunglasses when I boat, but the spray made that problematic. The swells were big, but moreso fast and powerful. I wouldn’t want to fish those conditions at all, but I am certain some diehards would.
Near shore ,the seas are affected by the tidal current . IE- If the wind and the incoming tide current oppose each other the seas will be pushed much higher. Haystacks at the end of the jetties
I noticed that there was one smaller boat, I would say around a 24, anchored south off the south jetty, near what my map calls “the dynamite hole.” While the jetty seemed to protect him somewhat from the northeast wind, from my view on binoculars as I entered the channel he was still getting hammered. One smaller boat and a low 20 foot cuddy were fishing what my map calls “the grillage” south of Sullivans inshore. I couldn’t tell if they were anchored, but they seemed uncomfortable even though sheltered from the northeast wind. I wouldn’t want to hold anchor in those seas!
You wouldn’t have any relatives living large on Daniel Island with crab issues?
2 TO 3 METERS WOULD BE BREAK NOT A SHAKEDOWN
We went out saterday to winyah scarp and fished all day two storms and high seas came around 11 am 14mph in 30 gamefish on way inn we were soaked
2-3 meters, huh? I guess the redcoats are now threatening the monopoly Ohio has on moving to SC.
I don’t recall the forecast ever calling for 10 feet of swell and it certainly wasn’t bigger than 10 feet or id have been on folly surfing it. I’m sure your intrepid did great in 10 foot plus waves
For some reason this reminds me of that funny “kingfishing” video/meme that has been around several times before! Cracks me up just thinking about it
10’… BAM!!
