Well it is getting to be that time, in fact I skipped deer hunting last saturday am to fish after having some repairs to my boat.
Quick story though after I had my 3 doz BB’s and waited on the anal retentive green fish TX fishermen to clear the ramp like the start of a Nascar Race I backed the boat into the water and fired it up. Well much to my surprise my steering cable had frozen up, had this happen on another boat several years ago. Not but one thing to do, keep the boat on the trailer and head back home. Tried a few things at home but I knew it would not help much.
My boat is a 99 and I have been thinking about switching to hydraulic steering but never felt like spending the money, well as soon as I dropped the boat off at Long’s Marine Tim suggested that and even though I grumbled I knew it was time and the extra costs would be well worth it.
So I sit here boatless this weekend but would not have time to fish on Sat anyway due to work.
I did talk with one of my fishing partners and he had some luck on the lake today at different areas but could never get a consistant bite but marked a lot of bait in some areas. Hopefully I will be ready to go next Friday/Sat.
He did tell me water temp was down to 55 and I am sure it will drop a little more with this cool weather in place.
Bob(ctoolman) I noticed you have tried to get some reports going on GSK’s web site. Good luck I have done that off and on for the last couple of years and seems to be just a few of us posting and everyone else fishing these spots. I do not understand why folks will not post reports like we do here on Charlestonfishing.com.
Good luck to those that fish the weekend and let’s see some reports
wish i had known you were fishing last sat,my normal partner back out at the last minute,so spent all day trying to kill 5 dozen bait…finally thru 2 dozen back so i could rebuy them this sat…
yeah i am trying to get people to open up over there, not much luck,i have gotten a couple of hateful e-mails,very interesting because all that makes me want to do is give even more specific directions…
when did fishing become so competitive and not fun???i must have missed that transition…
had one of our famous ricky racer bass fisherman actually cut my planer board line lat sat…amazing how ignorant they are…[:0]
i will be out there either sat/sun this weekend and i plan on going monday and either exploring or fishing not sure depends on the wind,i have read some reports that the dam maybe hot, that has my curiousity up??
Tprice anytime you need a boat to fish on,let me know…
Bob, I started to call and invite you but I wanted to check everything out. For some reason I had one of those funny feelings that something would go wrong and I figure better to be frustrated alone that with someone else. I will take you up on the offer since I am just about burnt out on deer hunting, did not even go this am and may even head to the golf course with my son today since he is outa school.
Keep in touch and I will keep some reports posted as I get them from my fishing buddies, I have a couple that will fish 2-4 days a week this time of year and let me know where to go.
The guy I was talking about fishing Thursday used shiners for bait instead of BB’s and he thinks maybe that could have been his problem. This time of year we sometimes do better with shiners due to the fish feeding on the small threadfin shad everywhere.
Did you ever look into a Lowrance unit anymore??
Also glad to see you are a full fledged striper fisherman now. The intiation requries that you have at least one planer board cut off buy the guys with ADD(bass fishermen that drive 70mph to one spot which is normally right in the way of your trolling direction and drop their trolling motor and cast 5 times and then load up and take off like a rocket and do the same thing all over the lake:smiley:)
Fishing Sunday if anyone wants to take the drive down. Going ot one of my favorite secret spots </font id=“red”> that should be heating up right about now. Don’t tell anyone about Raysville and Holiday Park near the pump station.
I am going to troll early and try a new technique. Then as the day warms up, troll live bb until late afternoon. With some luck I will find a lunker. But don’t tell anyone!
Come on down.
Tprice, you will love the hydrolics. Look at it this way. Cables will cost around 150, a new star system is 650. Take away the 150 you would already be spending, and it is really only 500. When (and I hope no time soon) mine freezes, that is the route and rational I am going with.
yes tprice i did get a lcx332c…i use it for ff/gps…i am going to be using the garmin as a radar and a back up gps/ff if needed…
BTW the lowrance runs circles around the garmin for what i am doing…oh well lesson learned…
i am looking at some telescoping out riggers to replace the non-telescoping ones i have,i really think in the right circumstances they would work good for my boat, most of my catches have been on planner boards,i wonder if my boat is scaring them away from the down rods??
you know the list of goodies never ends…
looks like i will go out sat stay at home sunday(with company) and then head back out monday…
chrisg i can’t make it this sunday, already have friends coming into town…i promise not to tell this secret location…what was that again???oh yeah Raysville and Holiday Park on Clarks hill…your secret is safe here…
my secret location will be around coneross/martins creek and near twin lakes on lake hartwell…good luck to all…
I learned the same lesson, I bought a Furuno and it did not compare to the detail on the Lowrance model.
I have also thought of using my outriggers but mine are fixed and I have never fooled with them on the lake. The telesoping ones should work great.
I never thought of using them to spread out down rods, that is a good idea and I may try that. Can’t you see the faces of those “bass pros” in the fast boats when we start spreading out outriggers and all that good stufff:smiley:
Here is some food for thought. My free line out the middle, on a ballon (or float, or something) will be 150 to 200 ft behind the boat. The thinking is … yes the boat might scare aspread them out, but they will tend to re-congregate back at the same place, after I have passed over them. Then… boom! along comes this little bit of food (150 -200 ft.) behind my boat for them to eat. Gotcha
Sunday looks good for me. Will post on Monday
Catch um up. Big boys are hungry, time for some 20 lbers
But then again, there is alway the chance of a skunk
Chris, I do the same thing. I try and run that balloon line like a “shotgun” or “wayback” line when offshore fishing and a lot of times if not most it can be the most productive line as long as the bass boats do not cut it off.
put 3 in the boat sat, lost one.so not a bad day…will be back out monday…all on planer boards??
i actually got real brave and had 4 planer boards and 4 down rods out and was trying to think of how i could do more.i think i can do 2 more on balloons or bobber out the bad,now if that doesn’t look like a buffet going by for the stripers….i know i am sick but its a good sickness…
oh yeah if anyone finds the OFF button for the wind let me know:stuck_out_tongue:
I have seen some guys run 10-12 planer boards at a time. I pretty much stick with 2 on either side and a balloon way back and a couple of down rods. That way if I move I do not waste much bait, one word of caution never try this. One time I wanted to move and thought that I could keep all the baits on hooks and put baits in the bait tank and when I got to my next spot I could just pitch them right back out(my bait tank has one of the rod holders that does around the exterior of it for 8 rods). Well do the words CLUSTER F*** mean anything. I have never seen such a mess of tangled line in my life and I only moved about 1/2 mile:frowning_face:
But you can (I have) unhooked the bait and put them back in the baitwell and they will do fine. At $5/doz. you really don’t want to waste them.
Hope to go Sat. want to go up the SC Little River. For a couple of reasons. 1) the fish should be there (oposite side of raysville)
2) They have great ramps nearby at Dorn landing. Walk off ramps for launch and load. Climbing out the bow, then through the back of t he car to pull out is a pain (I am to old for it). Now if someone is with me, we can negotiate where we fish Sat. looks better, trying a new type of trolling
