how long is too long in the shop?

What is the average wait time in the area to have engine work done. Mine seems to always be in the shop for a month everytime it breaks? If I owned a charter company i would be broke.

And no i am not asking to name shops. I just want to find out if that is about right.

depends on what they doing to it but does seem a little long to me.

No one knows if YOU are THE village IDIOT or not until YOU open your mouth and speak!!!

depends on the time of year
summertime, 3 weeks is about average, depending on what the problem is.
for routine service and water pumps, we get boats in and out usually in the same day.
trouble shooting and diagnostic, as well as major repairs, rebuilding gearcases, 3-4weeks isnt unusual in the summer.
winter time, its MUCh faster.

I had mine in the shop for two months this past spring, and the guy (one man show) never even quoted a price and never started the work. I finally just went to get the boat and it is still not fixed. This is in Oconee County by Lake Keowee. I took it to him bc he was very close. I will never do that again. The only reason I left it that long is that I didn’t have a chance to get over there to take back my boat.

A month is way too long unless you are having major work done. Most shops don’t get you to bring your boat in until they are ready for you. If you are “dead in the water” and you just drop it off, then you might have to wait a bit. In my experience, most good shops will schedule you and make sure you are in and out within a week unless you have something that they can’t diagnose.

jtm - waited a week to get it in. Its been there 3 weeks and i cant even get them to return a call so i can tell them whats wrong. I guess i need to go get it !

I couldn’t even get the shop to call me back with a price on buying a new motor after. What gives? Guess he’s got enough business or too much money to care.

I figured it out. Went ahead and bought from another shop who was glad to have the business. I was on the water that afternoon!!

Thanks Seels!

we operate with a first come first serve or get in line. We are not going to put you in line then tell you to wait till we can get to it. We try to inspect it and find the problem within the first few days then if we have to order parts it gets put back in the back till the parts and everything is in. Glass work is different. if they have not even called you within a month and told you what is wrong with your boat then you should have picked it up weeks ago and took it somewhere else. Chris V can agree that if a service department has to order parts then that is what takes so long. We do not work on a boat till all the parts are in. We don't even start to rig a new boat till all the after market options are in. just keeps things organized

I think I was given his name once by the guys at Portronics. I will give him a call.

If I lived closer to Chucktown I’d get my boat over to Chris V in a heartbeat.

I am sorry to hear this. There are some great outfits in Charleston that work on your boat and there are also some that aren’t so great. In my experience, you get what you pay for. The better outfits run there service dept. like a business and do not take on more than they can chew off b/c they will have unhappy customers. There are also service depts. that will take every boat they can get and make people wait. You can pm me and I can suggest some good ones I have had experience with if you are looking for suggestions. Good luck!
