How much drag?

How do you determine how much drag to set on your reels? I have had fish strip drag off and determine that it was set too loose. Then I have had big fish pull the hook and determine that the drag may be set too tight.

I mainly fish for reds.

Is there a rule of thumb to go by?

1/4 of your main line.

get a small scale and pull 25% of breaking strength!

If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.

Thanks, I thought about using the Boga style fish scale. I just didn’t know what weight or %.

I always used 30% of the breaking strength. When you use a scale to set the drag, do it from a rod, not directly from the reel.
