How Much Line on Spool??

I am still relatively new to the braided line game so I have a question…maybe a couple. Say I am putting 20 lb. braid on a Shimano Symetre and the spool (of braid) has 150 yards. I know you need a mono backer on the spool first but, how much, how much line on such a reel is enough. I can’t imagine 150+ yards of line going out. I have only ever spooled a reel on sharks and would not be using this reel for such.

Any input would be appreciated.

I put a few wraps of electical tape on mine to eliminate using so much braid. Braid does not slip either. Have heard of the mono, just haven’t tried it. Good luck!!

On my inshore stuff, I typically put monofilament on half of the “spool capacity.” So if the reel says it’ll hold 200yards of 15lb test, I would put 100 yards of mono followed by 150 yards of 15 or 20lb braid. Others do differently, but I like to have the mono backing just incase I ever do begin to get spooled, I’ll know exactly how much line I have left. Rarely ever happens inshore, but its better to be safe than sorry.

I use an albright knot when connecting the mono to the braid.

i did use the albright knot but i’ve had it slip a few times especialy when tie on leaders. i switche to the uni knot and haven’t had one slip yet. when i wind my braid on i usually do like sailfish said…about half full of mono. then wind on the braid. most of the time it’s not going to fill the spool to the point i like( about 1/16 from the edge of the spool). if its not where i want i reel the braid back off the spool onto another reel put on more mono then repeat.after its filled the reel like i want i go out in the yard tie the braid to a stationary object walk off about 50 yards of line then wind it back on TIGHT as i can with out makeing it dig into the spool. that cuts down on wind knots. if your braid gets lower then like after a few break offs just put on more mono. and don’t forget to use a floro leader makes a big difference!

T2 have you tried doubling the number of turns in the braid? I had some slip a couple of times before I started doing this, since then no slips.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Does anyone have a best knot for tying floro leader to braid? The double uni is easy enough, but bangs the rod eyes & the blood works well, if you can get it cinched up without the floro slipping. There’s a ‘slim beauty’ knot that’s supposed to a good one, but I’ve crossed my eyes trying to get it right.

I use a blood knot. So far, no problems. Just make sure you moisten the knot real good before cinching…

I use the old standard. surgeons knot. It’s simple, and I have never broken one. On freshwater rods the guides are smaller and just about any knot will snag on its way out.

A quadruple surgeons knot and you can tie it to the back of a truck and pull stumps with it.
